Senators coaching update: All eyes on Travis Green

The Ottawa Senators appear to be zeroing in on one candidate for their vacant head coaching position.

“All eyes on Travis Green here,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said Monday on The Jeff Marek Show. “I want to be careful about this. Nothing is done until it’s done, but I’m hearing all eyes on Travis Green. We’ll see what the next few days brings.”

Green most recently was the interim head coach of the New Jersey Devils after replacing Lindy Ruff on March 4. He also served as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks from 2017-22.

Friedman provided more insight into the Senators’ coaching search on Monday’s episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, reporting that former Blues head coach Craig Berube was no longer in the running.

“I mentioned on Friday that he was considered high on Ottawa and New Jersey’s list,” Friedman said on the podcast. “I had some people tell me they don’t think it’s gonna be Ottawa. Now, again, I’m not saying it means it’s gonna be definitely Jersey, cause I think Toronto may weigh in on this, but I had a few people tell me don’t hitch your wagon to Berube and the Senators.”

The Senators finished the season under interim coach Jacques Martin, after firing D.J. Smith on Dec. 18. Berube, who won the Stanley Cup in St. Louis in 2019, has been out of work about the same amount of time, having been fired by the Blues on Dec. 12.
