Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Brett Pesce will not be joining the team on their road trip for the first two games of their first-round series against the New York Rangers.
Team president and general manager Don Waddell told reporters Wednesday that Pesce has shed a walking boot and is doing work to return and should play at some point in the second-round series against the Rangers.
“If everything goes as expected, he shall play games this round,” Waddell said in a Zoom call with reporters. “Maybe not right off the start, but will play games in this round.”
Pesce came up hobbled in a non-contact situation in Game 2 of the first-round series win against the New York Islanders and didn’t play again. DeAngelo took Pesce’s spot opposite Brady Skjei on Carolina’s deep blue-line, only to exit late from Tuesday’s Game 5 clincher after taking an uncalled slash to the arm from Pierre Engvall near the boards.
The Rangers and Hurricanes will open their series Sunday at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT. Watch Game 1 on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
A funeral is being held today for hockey broadcasting legend Bob Cole in his hometown of St. John’s, N.L.
The service is set to begin at 2 p.m. local time at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church in the heart of the city.
Cole was a giant of Canadian sports broadcasting and his career spanned more than half a century.
With his signature wit, passion and “Oh baby!” exclamations, he brought life to some of hockey’s biggest games behind the microphone with “Hockey Night in Canada.”
His daughter, Megan Cole, has said he refused every time his bosses asked him to move away from Newfoundland and Labrador, and his deep connection with the province was “everything” to him.
Cole died last week at the age of 90 surrounded by his family in his home city.
