Piastri on pole for Emilia-Romagna GP as Ferrari struggles

IMOLA, Italy — Oscar Piastri fought his way through traffic to take pole position in the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix on Saturday as Ferrari had a terrible session, with neither car in the top 10.

Piastri seemed to lose valuable time getting past cars toward the end of his final qualifying lap but it still proved enough as Max Verstappen fell just .034 of a second short of the Australian’s time. That gives Piastri a big advantage in Sunday’s race at a track where overtaking is notably difficult.

George Russell took third for Mercedes, pushing Piastri’s McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris down to fourth.

It was a tough day for the home fans as Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton and Formula 1’s sole Italian driver, Kimi Antonelli, all qualified outside the top 10. All three were caught out by rivals improving their times at the end of the second part of qualifying, with Leclerc 11th, Hamilton 12th and Antonelli 13th.

Earlier in the session, heavy crashes for Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto brought out the red flag.

Wild sign prospect Danila Yurov to entry-level contract

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Wild signed center Danila Yurov, their 2022 first-round draft pick, to a three-year, entry-level contract on Friday.

Yurov has played in the KHL in his native Russia for the last five seasons for Metallurg Magnitogorsk, with 41 goals, 47 assists and a plus-41 rating over 209 career games. He had eight goals in 61 games in the playoffs, winning a Gagarin Cup championship with Metallurg last year.

Yurov, who won a silver medal with Russia at the world junior championship in 2021, was the 24th overall pick in the NHL draft in 2022. The 6-foot-1, 176-pound Yurov will have a prime opportunity to make the team at age 21 with a strong training camp next season, with the Wild’s center depth currently lacking behind Joel Eriksson Ek.

“Centre’s a very difficult position to play as a young player. We’d like to see him there, see how he does and then we’ll go from there,” general manager Bill Guerin said. “Just like any other young player, defensively, you really have to want to play a 200-foot game. That’s going to be really important for him, especially where our team’s at.”

Former UFC champion Holly Holm signs with Jake Paul’s MVP boxing promotion

Holly Holm is stepping back into the boxing ring under Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) brand.

The organization announced Holm is set to face Yolanda Vega on June 28 on the undercard of an event headlined by Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Before the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion began her full-time mixed martial arts career in 2013, the Albuquerque, N.M., native was a multiple-time world boxing champion and is still considered one of the all-time great female boxers.

Holm debuted in the UFC in 2015 and that same year knocked out Ronda Rousey to become the UFC’s 135-pound champ. “The Preacher’s Daughter” never defended the title and only won five of her next 13 bouts in the UFC. All but two of her UFC losses were fellow UFC champions.

Now 43 years old, Holm last fought at UFC 300 roughly 13 months ago when she lost via submission to two-time Olympic gold medallist Kayla Harrison.

“I’m excited to partner with Most Valuable Promotions and return to the boxing ring. This new chapter is going to be an exciting journey, and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” Holm said in an official MVP press release. “Coming full circle back to boxing — I’ve spent most of my MMA career at 135 pounds, and now I have the opportunity to make my boxing debut at that weight. With boxing titles in three higher weight classes under my belt, I’m eager to pursue a fourth title in a new division.”

Holm has a pro boxing record of 33-2-3; her last pro boxing match was in 2013 when she retained the IBA female, and WBF female light welterweight titles in a win over Mary McGee.

Mexico’s Vega, 29, is 10-0 coming off a unanimous decision win in September.

“Fighting against a champion of this stature on Saturday, June 28 brings me closer to my aim of becoming a world champion,” Vega said. “I respect and admire her work a lot, but today she has become my next goal, and goals are meant to be achieved.”

The upcoming MVP event is scheduled for the Honda Center in Anaheim and also features a WBA and WBO cruiserweight title bout between Gilberto Ramirez and Yuniel Dorticos.

The six-foot-seven, 330-pound Zerr, of Langenburg, Sask., was entering his second season with the Riders. He was originally taken in the second round, No. 12 overall, in the 2022 CFL draft by the B.C. Defensive backs Leon Jones and Nicario Harper, receiver Ty James, defensive lineman Justin Jefferson, running back Khalan Laborn and global punter Joe Couch were also released. Jones, Harper, James, Jefferson and Laborn were Americans.

Laborn signed with Saskatchewan as a free agent this off-season after spending time in 2024 with Toronto and Ottawa.

The Riders also transferred twin Canadian linebackers Justin and Jordan Herdman-Reed along with American offensive lineman Julius Buelow to the suspended list.
