Canadas Hadwin ties for second at Rocket Mortgage Classic after Fowler wins playoff

Canada’s Adam Hadwin settled for a tie for second at the PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit after American Rickie Fowler won in a three-man playoff.

Fowler drained a 12-foot birdie on the par-4 18th — the first playoff hole — to beat out Hadwin and Collin Morikawa.

Minutes earlier, Hadwin just missed a birdie putt from 22 feet. Morikawa found the rough with his approach and his chip wasn’t close.

Hadwin, who began the day one shot behind Fowler for the lead, fell just short of his second career PGA Tour win. He earned his first title at the 2017 Valspar Championship.

In regulation, Hadwin reached the green in two and birdied the par-5 17th to put himself into a tie for the lead with Morikawa.

The Canadian then had to get up-and-down for par on No. 18 to ensure his spot in a playoff. Fowler made a three-footer for birdie after an excellent approach shot on No. 18 to join the playoff.

Morikwaka, who started the day four shots off the lead, fired an 8-under 64 to put pressure on the leaders. All three finished 72 holes at 24 under.

Last month, Hadwin made headlines around the world when he was tackled by a security guard as he raced to the green to spray fellow Abbotsford golfer Nick Taylor with champagne after he won the RBC Canadian Open before a raucous crowd in Toronto.

Hadwin took the incident in good stride, poking fun at himself and not blaming the security guard.

Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont., who started the day two off the lead, dropped back into a tie for 14th.
