MLB Waivers Roundup: Guardians claim three pitchers, Reds add two outfielders

A number of significant names were claimed off waivers across MLB as teams finalize their 40-man rosters for the playoffs ahead of Thursday’s midnight deadline.

Here is a roundup of the teams that made additions.

Cleveland Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians, who were sellers at the trade deadline but have remained in the hunt for the AL Central title, made a big splash by acquiring three pitchers from the Angels.

Right-handed starter Lucas Giolito and right-handed reliever Reynaldo Lopez will join the Guardians for the season’s final month, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel reports that left-handed reliever Matt Moore will also go to the Guardians from the Angels.

The Guardians enter play Thursday six games out of a wild-card spot but five games behind the Minnesota Twins for first in the division.

Giolito, arguably the most talented pitcher available this week on waivers, joins a Guardians rotation that has been a strong suit despite not having ace Shane Bieber. Lopez will give the Guardians more options to bridge the gap to All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase. Moore, a veteran, has a 2.66 ERA in 41 relief appearances this season.

Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds added two more outfielders off waivers as they try to snap a decades-long (full-season) playoff drought.

The Reds added speedy centre fielder Harrison Bader from the New York Yankees and power bat Hunter Renfroe from the Angels.

Bader is hitting just .240 this season but has 17 stolen bases. Renfroe is hitting .242 with 19 home runs.

Unclaimed

Despite speculation he might be a good fit for the Toronto Blue Jays, outfielder Randal Grichuk was not claimed from the Angels. The veteran right-handed bat is hitting .267/.323/.452 this season split between Los Angeles and the Colorado Rockies, but has a .567 OPS since being traded to the Angels at the deadline.

Spain’s Bonmati, Carmona await UEFA award ceremony amid Rubiales crisis

MONACO — Two players who won the Women’s World Cup with Spain are on the short-list for the player of the year award from European soccer body UEFA on Thursday as the sport continues to deal with the turmoil created by Luis Rubiales.

The Spanish soccer federation president has refused to resign from his position despite causing an uproar after kissing Spain player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after the team beat England in the World Cup final 11 days ago.

Spain teammates Aitana Bonmati and Olga Carmona are both candidates to win the UEFA award, along with Australia forward Sam Kerr.

Rubiales, who is also a UEFA vice president, has been banned from the award ceremony because he has been suspended by FIFA, the governing body of world soccer.

Spain coach Jorge Vilda is among three candidates for the women’s coaching award, even as he fights moves by the federation to remove him.

England coach Sarina Wiegman _ the only woman on the shortlist _ is also among the candidates, along with Barcelona coach Jonatan Giraldez.

The awards will be presented during the draw ceremony for the men’s Champions League.

The men’s player and coach awards could be dominated by Manchester City, which won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season.

Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland are competing in the best player category against Lionel Messi, who now plays for Inter Miami. City manager Pep Guardiola is the favourite for the coaching award against Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi and Luciano Spalletti, who led Napoli to the Italian league title and now coaches the Italian national team.

“I want to write a new story” – Gabriel Magalhaes reveals what happened between him Arteta amid rumours that he might leave Arsenal before tomorrow’s transfer DEADLINE HOURS

The Brazilian centre-back formed a key partnership with William Saliba last season and impressed in defence amid Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge.

But Mikel Arteta has decided to drop him from the starting XI this term, with Gabriel coming off the bench in wins over Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.

He was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s last match – a 2-2 home draw against Fulham – and it was thought that the Gunners were open to selling the defender.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright feels his former club are missing the presence of Gabriel, who has reportedly attracted interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia as well as Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The 25-year-old, though, has hinted that he will not be leaving north London this summer as he posted a picture of himself in Arsenal gear on Instagram on Thursday with the caption: ‘Ready to write a new story!!!’

Arteta has been urged to start Gabriel when Arsenal return to action on Sunday as they host Manchester United at the Emirates.

The Arsenal manager has tinkered him team this season with Ben White preferred at centre-back while midfielder Thomas Partey has been used as a right-back.

Gary Neville has predicted that Arteta will end his ‘experiment’ when the Gunners take on Erik ten Hag’s side in their next match.

‘Sometimes you need to go back to basics,’ Neville said. ‘I’d expect Mikel Arteta is going to end that experiment and go with a solid back four.’

NFL places Jaguars CB Chris Claybrooks on exempt list amid domestic violence charges

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The NFL placed Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Chris Claybrooks on the commissioner’s exempt list Tuesday following his July arrest on domestic battery and false imprisonment charges.

Claybrooks is not allowed to practice or attend games while on the list. The announcement came as the Jaguars paired down their roster to 53 players.

A fourth-year backup from Memphis, Claybrooks has a pretrial hearing scheduled for Sept. 11 that could provide some clarity on whether the league suspends him, and if so, for how long.

Claybrooks entered a plea of not guilty earlier this month. The domestic battery charge is a misdemeanor, and the false imprisonment charge is a third-degree felony.

The 26-year-old defender was arrested after the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigated an incident from September 2022. A woman told police she and Claybrooks argued, and when she tried to leave their shared residence, he restrained her, according to an arrest report.

The woman provided investigators with a video showing Claybrooks forcefully grabbing her, moving her back into the home and restraining her upper body, according to the report.

It was the second time Claybrooks has been arrested and charged with domestic assault. He also was arrested in Nashville, Tennessee, in mid-April and charged with misdemeanor domestic assault with bodily injury and vandalism.

Claybrooks allegedly grabbed a cellphone from a woman and damaged it by throwing it to the ground, according to an affidavit. He reached a settlement in that case.

Blue Bombers can become first CFL team to clinch playoff spot with win in Week 13

TORONTO — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers can become the first CFL team to cement a playoff spot this weekend.

According to the CFL, Winnipeg (9-2) would become the first team to punch its post-season ticket with a road win Sunday over the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-5).

Winnipeg is 5-1 away from IG Field this season and 6-1 within the West Division. Saskatchewan has won four-of-seven games against conference rivals and is 3-2 at home.

With a win, Winnipeg would clinch a playoff spot for the seventh straight year. Last season, Winnipeg cemented its post-season berth after its 12th regular-season game.

The Bombers are chasing a fourth straight Grey Cup appearance and third title in four seasons.

Capitals GM MacLellan adds president of hockey operations to title

The Washington Capitals have promoted Brian MacLellan to president of hockey operations to go along with his general manager duties.

MacLellan has been the team’s GM since 2014 and previously held the title of vice president. The move announced Monday comes with longtime president Dick Patrick being appointed chairman of the Capitals and son Chris getting promoted to associate GM.

MacLellan was longtime GM George McPhee’s assistant before succeeding him in that role and finishing construction of the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2018. The Capitals made the playoffs in his first eight seasons running hockey operations before the streak ended last year. They have the third-most wins in the NHL over the past decade.

Chris Patrick will oversee the analytics department, player contract negotiations, the hockey ops staff, player personnel and budget and team scheduling issues, adding to the responsibilities he had as assistant GM. Patrick, 47, is entering his 16th season with Washington, previously working in player development, then as a scout and director of player personnel.

Dick Patrick, 76, has been with the organization since 1982 — a tenure that has included 32 playoff appearances in 40 seasons — and was owner Ted Leonsis’ original partner when Monumental Sports & Entertainment was formed in 2010.

McLaughlin qualifies fastest for Bommarito 500 but will start 10th

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Scott McLaughlin earned his fifth career IndyCar pole ahead of Sunday’s Bommarito 500, but if he wants to earn his first career win on an oval, he will have to do so from the No. 10 starting position.

McLaughlin is one of six drivers who were assessed a nine-position grid penalty for unapproved use of a fifth engine this season.

“I just want an oval win so bad,” McLaughlin said. “I’ll do anything I can for an oval win right now. I’m really determined to get one. It’s the last thing on my checklist.”

McLaughlin completed his qualifying laps in 49.1936 seconds. Team Penske teammate Josef Newgarden will start in the top position after completing his qualifying laps in 49.3448 seconds.

McLaughlin can finish the season no higher than second place in the IndyCar driver standings, but Newgarden remains mathematically alive sitting four points behind of Scott Dixon and trailing leader Alex Palou by 105 points heading into the third-to-last race of the season.

“I think there’s disappointment that we’re not in a different position,” Newgarden said. “It doesn’t affect what we do today. If we win the race, Alex is going to land where he lands. We can’t control that. It’s either a good day, or we slip further out of the possibility of it.”

Newgarden is seeking his sixth consecutive win on an oval and fourth consecutive win at World Wide Technology Raceway outside of St. Louis. A.J. Foyt is the only other IndyCar driver to win seven straight races on ovals having accomplished the feat in 1964.

Qualifying was pushed back to Sunday morning after rain kept drivers off the track until 6 p.m. Saturday night.

PENALIZED

Chip Ganassi Racing and points leader Palou was assessed a nine-position starting grid penalty for unapproved engine changes after Saturday’s practice. Teammates Dixon and Takuma Sato, McLaughlin, Andretti Autosport’s Kyle Kirkwood and Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Gustin Canapino were also penalized for unapproved changes after the Gallagher Grand Prix on Aug. 12.

NEW RUBBER

Sunday’s race will be the first on an oval course to use the Firestone Firehawk alternate tires constructed with a softer compound to allow for more grip at the cost of quicker tire wear. All drivers will be required to start the race on the primary tires and run at least two laps on both sets of tires.

BACK BEHIND THE WHEEL

Conor Daly turned in the 15th best qualifying time of 50.0200 seconds in his first race for Rahal Letterman Lanigan racing. Daly replaces Jack Harvey who was released after the Gallagher Grand Prix. Daly started three races for Meyer Shank Racing filling in for an injured Simon Pagenaud after being released by Ed Carpenter Racing after the Detroit Grand Prix.

FIBA World Cup Day 3: Japan thrills, while France spills its way out of tournament

This is the day the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup has been waiting for.

Games going down to the wire, a thrilling upset, a record broken, and a powerhouse dumped out of the tournament. Japan provided the event’s best moment thus far in front of their home fans, Latvia pulled off a result that will send ripples across the basketball world, while Canada, Lithuania, and Montenegro also clinched spots in the next round.

Here’s everything you need to know from Day 3 at the FIBA World Cup:

RESULTS

Group A

Dominican Republic def. Italy 87-82

Angola def. Philippines 80-70

Group D

Montenegro def. Egypt 89-74

Lithuania def. Mexico 96-66

Group E

Germany def. Australia 85-82

Japan def. Finland 98-88

Group H

Canada def. Lebanon 128-73

Latvia def. France 88-86

MAIN TALKING POINTS

Japan make improbable comeback to stun Finland

It looked like smooth sailing for Lauri Markkanen and Finland, riding a massive second quarter to lead by as many as 18 at one point and by 10 heading into the fourth quarter.

No one was ready for the Yuki Kawamura show, though. The Japanese guard erupted for 15 fourth-quarter points including four triples to help the home side erupt for a 35-15 fourth quarter and steal a 98-88 victory.

Dominicans show real Olympic promise

Three minutes into their clash against Italy, Dominican Republic head coach Nestor Garcia was forced to call his second timeout. The Italians had jumped out to a 12-0 lead and Karl-Anthony Towns had yet to even get a proper touch of the ball.

It was steady, methodical domination thereafter, as the Dominicans outscored Italy 77-48 over the next 32 minutes. Towns was instrumental with 24 points and 11 rebounds but guard Andres Feliz was arguably even more impressive with 24 points, five rebounds, and five assists including 7-of-10 shooting from deep that knocked the wind out of Italy’s sails.

Taking their foot off the gas could have serious ramifications though, as Italy’s 22-10 closing run meant that the Dominicans only came away with a five-point win. Point differential carries over from this group phase to the next, and so that could be the difference between playing the U.S. or Lithuania in a potential quarterfinal.

Make it that far and an Olympic spot will be on the line.

Canada takes care of business against Lebanon

This was never expected to be a competitive game as Canada had too much of a talent advantage. The ball movement was crisp throughout as Canada set a FIBA World Cup record with 44 assists on its 50 made field goals in a 55-point victory.

It was nice to see R.J. Barrett bounce back with 17 points after struggling against France while Kelly Olynyk and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander impressed in limited playing time due to the blowout nature of the game. Jakarta Dillon Brooks continues to have the time of his life:

Trae Bell-Haynes took full advantage of the extra playing time, providing a great spark off the bench with 15 points and eight assists.

Canada improves to 2-0 with a plus-85 point differential and has clinched a spot in the next round. Canada will play Latvia on Tuesday to determine first place in the group.

PLAY OF THE DAY

It may be some Canadian bias, but R.J. Barrett had a sweet windmill dunk to push Canada’s lead to 50 against Lebanon early in the third quarter:

MOMENT OF THE DAY

The reaction from fans, players, and coaching staff alike was a sight to behold as the final buzzer sounded in Okinawa for Japan’s stunning win over Finland:

Honourable mention:

Germany came flying out of the gates against Australia with an 8-0 start, then leading 16-5. Patty Mills has been the heart and soul of The Boomers, though, and refused to back down. He scored his country’s first 13 points including this pull-up three in transition that sent the Aussie fans in Okinawa into delirium and set the stage for a thrilling contest.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“We respect the Italy team, their players, their coach is a fantastic coach, and their staff. It’s a national team with a big, big history. But, like I said before in other press conferences, I believe too much in my guys when their focus is to play good basketball.” — Dominican Republic head coach Nestor Garcia

“That was crazy. The fans were amazing, that was a big win, it was a big win for us. I’m really happy for the guys. We’re trying to create a new standard here for Japan basketball and this was definitely a big step in the right direction.” — Japan head coach Tom Hovasse

“It’s a huge, huge disappointment of course for us. We came here with huge expectations, we knew that. We let a lot of people down, ourselves first. We have a big thing (Olympics) coming up in 12 months so we have to look back, everybody from players to coach to staff to federation. Everybody gotta ask why, why we as France, so successful, one of the top teams the last 10 years, today was a big reality check for us. When you come wear that blue and white jersey with that name in front, that’s the biggest part of this, the name in front of the jersey. We didn’t do it, we clearly didn’t do it.” — France player Nicolas Batum

THREE STARS OF THE DAY

3. Joshua Hawkinson, Japan While Kawamura deservedly stole the headlines with his magical fourth quarter, Hawkinson kept Japan within striking distance with a huge 28-point, 19-rebound performance, where he shot 7-for-9 from the field and 14-for-15 at the free-throw line. The 6-foot-10 centre took full advantage of the dribble penetration by Japan’s guards and finished around the basket with ease. The American-born Hawkinson has been playing in Japan since 2017 and became a citizen earlier this year.

2. Andres Feliz, Dominican Republic I’ve already detailed Feliz’s tremendous performance earlier so just sit back and enjoy the show below:

1. Dennis Schroeder, Germany The way Schroeder was knocking down pull-up and catch-and-shoot threes with equal effect against Australia, Raptors fans will be wishing the FIBA three-point line could be applied to the NBA. He caused plenty of problems with his dribble penetration and finished at the basket with ease. His 30 points, including five threes, to go along with eight assists and four steals in a statement win is plenty to earn Sunday’s top star of the day.

LOOKING AHEAD

There are some big clashes in store for Monday. Puerto Rico and Serbia are the two best teams in Group B and will battle each other at 8:00 a.m. ET. The U.S. will look to lay a marker against its toughest Group C opponent on paper in Greece at 8:40 a.m. ET, and Luka Doncic will look to keep Slovenia undefeated against a Georgia team that opened its campaign with a 25-point win.

Defending champion Spain closes out the day’s action at 9:30 a.m. ET against a Brazil team that looked dominant in a win against Iran.

U.S. shakes off slow start and tops New Zealand in FIBA World Cup opener

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Paolo Banchero knows all about the haka, the traditional dance that was performed by New Zealand’s players pregame on Saturday as the traditional rallying cry to show national pride and serve as a challenge to opponents.

He accepted that challenge.

Banchero scored 21 points off the bench in his first World Cup game, Anthony Edwards added 14 and the U.S. shook off a 10-point early deficit on the way to beating New Zealand 99-72 in the tournament opener for both teams.

“I love watching them play,” U.S. coach Steve Kerr said. “It’s been an absolute joy to coach them just because of their eagerness to play together and be selfless and to compete.”

Jaren Jackson Jr. and Austin Reaves each scored 12 for the Americans, who remained unbeaten in six games this summer — the first five of them exhibitions. This game was the first that counted for the Americans, who are trying to win the World Cup for the sixth time and erase the memory of finishing seventh in FIBA’s biggest tournament four years ago in China.

It wasn’t easy for the pre-tournament favourites: Their lead was only 12 with 2:01 to go in the third before Banchero hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the U.S. its biggest edge of the night to that point, and the Americans kept control from there.

“And his defence,” Edwards said of Banchero. “I think his defense energized his offence.”

New Zealand’s players performed a pregame haka — a Māori ceremonial dance done by the entire 12-man roster — with the U.S. players standing at the other end and watching in silence.

The haka worked; New Zealand took a quick 14-4 lead. A 12-2 run by the U.S. tied the game, Tyrese Haliburton’s 3-pointer with 6:58 left in the first half put the Americans up for good, the lead was 45-36 by the half and the winners kept pulling away.

“They went on a little run, but no nerves,” Edwards said. “We do this. We put the work in.”

The haka took Banchero back to his high school days. Playing football on a team with Pacific islanders, Banchero has actually done the haka. He knows its meaning, knows its intent — and maybe it sparked him to his best game so far this summer.

“It was good to be able to see up close,” Banchero said. “I actually enjoyed it.”

The U.S. could secure a spot in the second round as early as Monday, when it takes on Greece (1-0) in a rematch of an exhibition game in Abu Dhabi earlier this month. The Americans won that game 108-86, with both teams holding some things back knowing they’d play for higher stakes in Manila.

Greece coach Dimitrios Itoudis said he expected his team’s opening game — a 21-point win over Jordan on Saturday — to be tough. He was asked post-game what he expected from the matchup with the U.S.

“Tougher one,” Itoudis said. “Much tougher one.”

TIP-INS

New Zealand: No player on New Zealand’s roster has played an NBA game. The players on the U.S. roster have combined to score 49,395 points in 3,454 NBA games, including playoffs. … Finn Delany and Shea Ili each scored 12. … New Zealand’s bench got outscored 54-23 by the U.S. reserves.

USA: Jackson Jr. had a perfect shooting night — 4 for 4 from the field, 4 for 4 from the line. … The Americans used 10 players in the first quarter, looking for the combination that worked. … The U.S. outscored New Zealand by 28 points in Josh Hart’s 15 minutes of play. … Haliburton and Jalen Brunson each scored 10 points for the Americans.

SCOUT DETAIL

The U.S. assistant coaches are splitting scouting responsibilities during the tournament. Gonzaga coach Mark Few was tasked with preparing the report for the New Zealand game, Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue will do it for the Greece game on Monday and Miami coach Erik Spoelstra has it for the Jordan game on Wednesday.

STILL PERFECT

The U.S. has played New Zealand four times now in senior men’s competition and won them all. The U.S. prevailed 102-56 at the 2000 Olympics, 110-62 at the 2002 World Cup and 98-71 at the 2014 World Cup.

UP NEXT

New Zealand: Faces Jordan on Monday.

USA: Faces Greece on Monday.

The new contract will replace the $10.091 million franchise tag Jacobs was initially supposed to play on and ends the running back’s holdout from training camp.

Rapoport and Pelissero also report that Jacobs can earn another $200,000 in incentives with the deal.

The 25-year-old led the NFL in rushing in 2022 with 1,653 yards rushing but the Raiders struggled to a 6-11 record last season.

Report: Insigne argues with interim coach Dunfield, leaves TFC training

An argument with interim head coach Terry Dunfield led to Lorenzo Insigne leaving a Toronto FC training session, Joshua Kloke and Tom Bogert of The Athletic reported Friday.

Insigne was reportedly unhappy when Dunfield had the Italian forward split reps on a drill with 20-year-old Deandre Kerr. As he departed from the pitch, Insigne reportedly made “derogatory comments” about TFC and how differently he is treated in comparison to other MLS stars.

He also said that he would decide if he would play in TFC’s next game against the Columbus Crew. The Athletic also reported that this is not the first time Insigne has walked out on a practice.

A spokesperson from the team confirmed to The Athletic that Insigne returned to training Friday, is scheduled to travel with the club to Columbus, where he is eligible to play on Saturday.

It has been a disappointing campaign for Toronto, which has failed to pick up a point since firing Bob Bradley as head coach on June 26.

The Athletic had previously reported in May that Insigne was part of a group of players who gathered on a conference call with the intention of having Bradley removed.

Broncos top receiver Jerry Jeudy carted off field with apparent hamstring injury

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos top receiver Jerry Jeudy was carted off the field with an apparent right hamstring injury after pulling up during an 11-on-11 play against the Los Angeles Rams in a joint practice Thursday.

Jeudy was running an end-around when he pulled up near the right sideline and grabbed his right hamstring. He needed help getting to the cart.

Jeudy had been hoping to shake off a poor performance the previous day when he had several drops in the teams’ first joint practice ahead of their preseason finale Saturday night.

Jeudy’s injury continues a run of bad luck for the Broncos’ receivers.

Tim Patrick tore his left Achilles tendon early in camp and will miss his second straight season. KJ Hamler was released after contracting a heart condition, although the team plans to bring him back once he recovers. And Jalen Virgil sustained a season-ending knee injury at the end of a 50-yard catch in the Broncos’ preseason game at San Francisco last week.

Jeudy missed two games last season while dealing with rib and left ankle injuries and a right high ankle sprain in 2021 sidelined him for six games.

Entering his fourth season, the 2020 first-round pick had emerged as Denver’s No. 1 receiver after a strong finish last season when he 35 catches for 523 yards and three touchdowns over the final six weeks of the season.

Nationals’ Stone Garrett broke left leg trying to rob home run at Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK (AP) — Washington Nationals right fielder Stone Garrett broke his left leg trying to rob a home run from the New York Yankees‘ DJ LeMahieu on Wednesday night.

The team on Thursday said Garrett had a fractured fibula and put him on the 10-day injured list. Manager Dave Martinez said the 27-year-old was meeting with lead physician Robert Najarian and getting further tests, including an MRI, to determine if there’s any other damage.

“He’s going to be out a while,” Martinez said prior to the Nationals’ series finale against the Yankees. “We’re going to wish him a fast recovery, and hopefully that leg heals up and he’ll be ready to play for us in the future.”

The scary scene played out in the seventh inning when LeMahieu hit an opposite-field drive over the short porch in right field. Garrett leaped at the wall and appeared to catch a spike from his left cleat in the wall’s padding as the ball went over.

Garrett was prone on his back for six minutes as athletic trainers from both teams attached an air cast and Washington teammates gathered. Garrett was helped to his feet and moved to a cart, then was taken off the field to an ovation.

Garrett was still in the clubhouse postgame. He was helped to his locker by head athletic trainer Paul Lessard and had his leg wrapped.

“I think it’s tough,” said Lane Thomas, who moved over from centre field to right field when Garrett exited late in Washington’s 9-1 loss. “Just a little emotional for him. Seeing somebody that that happens to is not fun either.”

The 27-year-old made his minor league debut in 2014 and played in Australia and Mexico before making his major league debut with Arizona on Aug. 17 last year. He hit .276 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 27 games for the Diamondbacks, elected to become a free agent and signed with the Nationals.

“He’s a guy that worked his way to get to the major leagues,” Martinez said. “I’m always partial to those guys that put the work in, that worked really hard to become who he is, and really tries to get better. I challenged him early on to be a better outfielder. He’s done it. I challenged him to put the ball in play more. He’s done that and driving in more runs. Everything I’ve asked him to do, he went out of his way to try and do.”

Garrett is hitting .269 with nine homers and 40 RBIs in 89 games. He also is hitting .378 over his last 11 games and had multiple RBIs in four consecutive games last week.

Martinez also praised Garrett as a clubhouse leader and fan favorite.

“He means a lot to us,” Martinez said. “He just has that presence about himself. Very soft spoken, but he’s one of the guys who liked to have fun, keep everyone loose. A great teammate.”

The race walker from Richmond, B.C., placed fourth in the men’s 35-kilometre event Thursday in a season’s-best time of two hours 25 minutes 28 seconds.

Spain’s Alvaro Martin came first in 2:24:30, followed by Ecuador’s Brian Daniel Pintado (2:24:34) and Japan’s Masatora Kawano (2:25:12).

Dunfee also finished fourth – and set a Canadian record with a time of 1:18:03 – in the 20-kilometre race walk earlier in the competition.

Several Canadians are involved in a busy evening session in Budapest, including Camryn Rogers in the women’s hammer throw final.

The 2022 world silver medallist from Richmond had the third-best throw in qualifying at 73.95 metres.

Meanwhile, reigning Olympic champion Andre De Grasse of Markham, Ont., will race in the men’s 200-metre semifinals along with Aaron Brown and Brendon Rodney, both of Toronto.

Edmonton’s Marco Arop will race in the men’s 800 semifinals after finishing with the second-best time in the heats.

And Olympic silver medallist Mo Ahmed of St. Catharines, Ont., will run in the men’s 5,000 heats.

Former USC star Reggie Bush plans defamation lawsuit against NCAA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former Southern California running back Reggie Bush plans to file a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA over a statement made by college sports’ governing body about the reasoning for its decision not to restore the Heisman Trophy winner’s records.

Bush announced his plan Wednesday through his attorneys at McCathern PLLC.

Bush objects to a statement issued in July 2021 calling the star’s playing career at USC a “pay-for-play” arrangement. That standard was cited as the reason the NCAA wouldn’t restore Bush’s records, a decision that led to Bush returning his Heisman Trophy.

“The NCAA’s statement is completely false and highly offensive,” the statement from Bush’s lawyers read. “The NCAA knew Mr. Bush was never even accused of, involved in, much less sanctioned for any ‘pay–for–play arrangement’ which never occurred.”

Two years ago after NCAA athletes were given the right to profit off their name, image and likeness rights, the Heisman Trust issued a statement saying it would look “forward to welcoming (Bush) back to the Heisman family” if the NCAA formally restored its recognition of Bush’s accomplishments.

Bush returned his Heisman Trophy in 2010 after a lengthy NCAA investigation determined he had received improper benefits during his USC career. The NCAA hit USC with hefty sanctions including a two-year bowl ban, 14 vacated victories and severe scholarship restrictions.

Bush also was required to “disassociate” from USC for 10 years. That ban ended in 2020, and USC welcomed back one of the greatest running backs in school history. Bush has never specified what extra benefits he received.

“Pay-for-play” typically refers to a different type of improper benefit arrangement than the one which resulted in USC’s sanctions and the loss of Bush’s Heisman. That seems to be the reasoning behind Bush’s decision to file the lawsuit.

“The lawsuit is based on the NCAA maliciously attacking his character through a completely false and highly offensive statement that was widely reported in the media and substantially and irreparably damaged his reputation,” the statement from Bush’s lawyers reads.

Brooke Henderson hopes to return to top form at home: ‘The highlight of my year’

VANCOUVER – It’s the same kind of week that Brooke Henderson has come to expect at the CPKC Women’s Open. Her face is everywhere. From the autograph zone to the VIP entrances to the tickets themselves – it’s big and prominent. And deserved.

Five years since her triumph at Canada’s national open in Regina – breaking a 45-year drought on the women’s side – Henderson has gone on to win another major on the LPGA Tour and notched her 13th career title earlier this year at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.

But this, and this week, never gets old. And, with just two months left in the season, this is the kind of event where Henderson is keen to end her year in the same strong way she started.

“I feel like here on tour time goes by really quickly. I can’t believe it’s already August this year and only have eight events left for my playing schedule. Things go by really quick,” Henderson said. “To be in the final group again and feeling that energy was a big boost. Hopefully the next few weeks here – I’m playing three in a row – so hopefully I can get that feeling again.”

Henderson was firmly in the mix at the Amundi Evian Championship, the fourth of five majors on the LPGA Tour schedule, but her runner-up result in France was just her second top-10 finish of the season. At the final major of the year, the AIG Women’s Open, she missed the cut in England.

Her ball-striking this season hasn’t been up to her usual standard, and that, Henderson said, would be the key this week. Henderson is 33rd on the LPGA Tour in greens in regulation on the year, a stat she was fifth in last year and fourth the year prior.

Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club hosted the PGA Tour’s RBC Canadian Open in 2011 and the winning score was 4 under. It’s a stout, championship test.

Henderson said being crisp with her approaches into the slopey and quick greens is going to be important.

“The fairways are pretty tight, and the greens are pretty small, so ball striking will definitely be very important and a big key,” Henderson said. “I am heading out to the range after this to work on some ball striking, so hopefully it’s sharp come Thursday.”

Last week Henderson took a week off back at home in Ontario and flew into Vancouver on Sunday rested and ready – and sporting a new look.

Henderson, who wears glasses off the course for things like movies and sight-seeing (no pun intended), decided to keep them on while she played. She admitted it was “a bit of a change” but she knew that it was time. Henderson began practising with them on last week.

“It just time that I wanted to be able to see things a little bit better and maybe not depend on Brit so much,” Henderson said, speaking of her sister and caddie. “This will be the first week in competition. I’m excited […] it’s really nice to be able to see some things.

“Hopefully it gives me maybe not an advantage but helps me improve my game a little bit.”

Henderson is one of 15 Canadians in the field all eyeing the title this week in Vancouver, with Maddie Szeryk the only other full-time LPGA Tour member in the field. Szeryk’s sister, Ellie, is teeing it up on a sponsor invite (the first time they’ve played together in an LPGA Tour event) while Victoria Liu – who goes to Princeton – is a Shaughnessy member playing the LPGA Tour this week. Then there’s Alena Sharp. The veteran is playing her 18th CPKC Women’s Open and was low Canadian last year in Ottawa. She’s won on the Epson Tour this year and has five top-10 results on the LPGA’s feeder circuit.

But while there are plenty of notable names flying the Canadian flag this week, none are as prominent as Henderson.

Henderson said she gets goosebumps any time she revisits that Sunday afternoon in Regina five years ago in her mind and she just wants the opportunity to try to do that again.

Her game plan is in place and her vision for the week is clear. Now it’s just time to execute in front of a home-country crowd.

“This week is a big deal. It’s the highlight of my year pretty much every year,” Henderson said. “Winning this championship back in 2018 is definitely the highlight of my career, so I would love to be able to do that again someday.”
