Ryan, MacLeod headline PWHL coaches

Canadian national women’s hockey team coach Troy Ryan will be on the bench when Toronto’s Professional Women’s Hockey League team takes to the ice.

The PWHL announced the head coaches for all six of its teams Friday.

Along with Ryan, who coached Canada to gold at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the PWHL general managers have appointed Carla MacLeod (Ottawa), Courtney Kessel (Boston), Kori Cheverie (Montreal), Howie Draper (New York) and Charlie Burggraf (Minnesota).

“As a league, we are fortunate to embark on our inaugural season with a distinguished group of head coaches who have demonstrated leadership and a commitment to player development at all levels of women’s hockey,” PWHL senior vice president of hockey operations Jayna Hefford said in a statement.  “I want to credit our general managers for their efforts in identifying highly qualified candidates that are well respected and motivated to help our athletes reach their full potential in the PWHL.”

MacLeod is the head coach of Czechia’s national team, winning historic back-to-back bronze medals at the 2022 and 2023 world championships. She spent the past two seasons as a head coach at the University of Calgary and is a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Canada and four-time world championship medalist.

Kessel was the head coach for the CWHL’s Toronto Furies during the 2018-19 season following her playing career having captured one gold and two silver medals at the world championship for Canada.

Cheverie has worked alongside Ryan as an assistant coach for the Canadian national women’s hockey team and also played six seasons in the CWHL.

Draper has served as the head coach for the University of Alberta’s women’s hockey program for 25 years, winning a record eight U SPORTS national championships plus four U SPORTS Coach of the Year awards.

Burggraf was an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota and has coached both the women’s and men’s hockey programs at Bethel University.

The PWHL is set to hold its inaugural draft Monday. Following the conclusion of the draft, each team will have 18 players — three free agency signings and 15 draft picks.

All undrafted players automatically become free agents following the draft and can sign a standard player agreement with any team.

Training camp rosters, which each must have a minimum of 28 players, will be fleshed out through this second free agency period and via negotiated tryouts.
