Vancouver Canadians capture high-A Northwest League title

The Vancouver Canadians claimed the Northwest League title on Saturday night.

The Canadians, who are the high-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, earned a decisive 10-2 win over the visiting Everett AquaSox in Game 4 of their best-of-five series at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Vancouver was already up 8-2 — thanks to a five-run fourth inning — when second baseman Nick Goodwin hit a two-run homer in the seventh that put the game out of reach.

Canadians left fielder Gabriel Martinez, who is ranked 27th among all Blue Jays prospects, had three hits and two RBIs. Right fielder Garrett Spain contributed with three hits, two runs and two RBIs while third baseman Cade Doughty, Toronto’s 16th-ranked prospect, added two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Ryan Jennings set the tone on the mound giving up zero hits and one walk over three scoreless innings while also earning five strikeouts. Anders Tolhurst took over and picked up the win as he threw four innings giving up two runs on four hits, zero walks and three strikeouts.

The Canadians led the league through the first half of the year at 38-27 and finished the 2023 regular season with the best record overall at 77-54.

It’s the fifth league championship for Vancouver, which won three consecutive titles from 2011-13 and earned a fourth in 2017.

The Canadians finished runners-up last year in their first season with manager Brent Lavallee on the bench. They lost in three straight games during the final series against the Eugene Emeralds.
