Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook will be out for approximately 10 to 12 weeks with a high ankle sprain, the team announced Saturday.
The injury occurred early in the third period of Thursday’s loss to the Florida Panthers. Newhook lost an edge and slid feet-first into the net. He was helped off the ice by training staff and didn’t look to be placing any weight on his left leg.
The 22-year-old forward was acquired by the Canadiens in the off-season in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a first- and second-round pick and a prospect. He’s scored seven goals and 13 points in 22 games for the Canadiens this season, tying for fourth in team scoring.
The St. Johns, N.L., native was selected 16th overall by the Avalanche in the 2019 NHL Draft.
