Akim Aliu says Kim Davis has missed ‘massive opportunity’ with NHL on diversity

Akim Aliu had high hopes for Kim Davis — especially after their early dialogue.

The NHL’s executive vice-president of social impact, growth initiatives and legislative affairs seemed open, Aliu thought at the time, to ideas put forward by the Hockey Diversity Alliance, an organization started by a group of current and former players of colour looking to share their experiences in hopes of bettering the sport.

Aliu, one of those founding members, said the tone quickly changed. And he believes Davis has fumbled her chance to make an impact.

“Extremely disappointing,” Aliu said in a recent interview. “Kim Davis without (NHL commissioner) Gary Bettman on the call versus Kim Davis with Gary Bettman on the call are two different people.

“She has missed a massive opportunity to come in as a woman of colour and, for once, be in a position of power in hockey.”

Davis, who started with the NHL in 2017 and has been at the fore of its diversity and inclusion initiatives, declined to address Aliu’s criticism when contacted by The Canadian Press.

“I’ve been in the business of change work in major corporations for over 40 years,” she said. “I don’t need to be affirmed by Akim. What affirms me is progress.

“The point at hand is young people and growing the game. I thought that’s what (the HDA) was about, not talking about what I am or am not doing.”

The links between the HDA and NHL frayed after 2020’s initial push. The league launched — or relaunched in the HDA’s eyes — its Player Inclusion Coalition in June with the NHLPA to “advance equality and inclusion” in the sport.

The HDA, which includes current NHLers Nazem Kadri and Matt Dumba, felt betrayed, said Aliu.

“Zero relationship,” Aliu, the HDA’s chairman, said of the NHL. “They actively tried to silence us.”

Aliu was born in Nigeria before his family eventually relocated to Toronto.

A journeyman pro hockey player who appeared in seven NHL games, Aliu revealed in November 2019 then-Calgary coach Bill Peters bullied and directed racist slurs at him in the minors a decade earlier. Peters resigned and the league instituted a personal conduct policy in hopes of tackling racism in a traditionally white-dominated sport.

So where did things go wrong for the HDA and NHL?

“Just as they’re doing with other individuals … they essentially bring you in and buy you, in a way, to silence you,” Aliu said. “We were a group that would not be silenced.”

The HDA — which Aliu said is supporting more than 700 kids in hockey from underserved communities across the Greater Toronto Area, and has plans to expand programs to other cities — is hosting its first-ever WinterFest this weekend.

The event aimed highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion in hockey is set for Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park as the NHL is holding its all-star festivities in the city.

“We’ve been looked at for a long time as a group that’s confrontational,” Aliu said. “We’re the only group that calls out the hockey establishment, but it’s important to highlight all of the work.”

Aliu was also critical of the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition.

“Nothing happens,” he said. “Essentially they’re giving each one of the players a sum of money to put into a cause that’s important to them. It’s not necessarily a cause to grow the game.”

Davis and the NHL pushed back on that sentiment, pointing out that along with funding, there have been eight player-led initiatives since last summer, including learn-to-play clinics, ball hockey programs and mentorship sessions.

“Diversity is not a monolith,” Davis said. “Diversity has many tentacles. I honestly don’t know what the disconnect is.”

The NHL is also holding several community events during all-star week, including its “hockey rink for all,” a youth jamboree and an all-star Pride Cup.

“Is everything perfect? Of course not,” Davis said. “But I think we’re putting the tools and the policies and the accountability elements in place. This is a long game.”

Aliu said one area where he’s seen change is the media being more aware of what he called “performative” gestures.

“Within the communities and the few people doing this work, it’s a nice sight,” he said.

Aliu added that while there has been progress, in his view the game has taken a step back.

“Let’s just cancel all the Pride jerseys because seven guys didn’t want to wear them,” he said of the NHL’s decision to ban LGBTQ+ warmup threads. “They can go around and have all their slogans.

“People actually doing the work know it’s an act.”

TORONTO ALL-STAR

Canada’s largest city, which last hosted the NHL’s big bash back in 2000, has welcomed other sports’ big events in the interim.

The NBA all-star game was held at Air Canada Centre — now Scotiabank Arena — in 2016. Major League Soccer held its showcase at BMO Field in 2008 when England’s West Ham United met the MLS all-stars.

Canucks sign GM Patrik Allvin to multi-year extension

The Vancouver Canucks have signed general manager Patrik Allvin to a multi-year extension, the NHL club announced Wednesday.

The move comes after president Jim Rutherford inked a multi-year extension with the club earlier this month.

“Patrik has done a terrific job in helping us rebuild our hockey team both on and off the ice,” Rutherford said in a statement issued by the team. “He has worked tirelessly to create a new culture and identity that embodies the important attributes of hard work, structure and dedication. With an ever-present win-the-day mentality, Patrik’s leadership skills will be a key driver for our organization moving forward.”

The Canucks (33-11-5) have been a major success story this season, leading the Western Conference after missing the playoffs the past three years.

Rutherford, less than two months after joining the Canucks, hired Allvin as GM in January 2022.

The two previously worked together with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Allvin and Rutherford shook up the coaching staff last season, replacing Bruce Boudreau with Rick Tocchet. The results have been outstanding.

“I want to thank the Aquilini family and Jim Rutherford for providing me this incredible opportunity,” said Allvin, the first Swedish general manager in NHL history, said in the same team statement. “The privilege of staying on to continue what we started here with the Canucks means so very much to me and my family. While our group has taken many positive steps forward, the job is not done. We will continue to push and put in the work necessary to build a championship-calibre team.”

Allvin has inked J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser to extensions during his time with the club.

The next big name due for a new contract is forward Elias Pettersson, who is a pending restricted free agent.

QB Chris Streveler returns to Blue Bombers on one-year deal

A Winnipeg Blue Bombers fan favourite is returning to the CFL team.

Quarterback Chris Streveler signed a one-year deal with the club on Wednesday, the team announced.

Streveler, 29, spent the past four seasons in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. He suited up for nine regular-season games and started one.

Before that, Streveler helped the Blue Bombers win the Grey Cup in 2019.

The Blue Bombers likely now have a solid backup to Zach Collaros after promising youngster Dru Brown was traded to the Ottawa Redblacks. Brown, who was slated to become a free agent, is expected to be Ottawa’s starter.

Streveler’s lone NFL start came for Arizona in the 2020 season finale. Replacing the injured Kyler Murray, Streveler threw for 105 yards, one touchdown and one interception in an 18-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Streveler then made headlines in 2022 when he led the Jets to three comeback victories in exhibition play, prompting head coach Robert Saleh to say his quarterback “probably had one of the greatest pre-seasons in the history of football.”

It wasn’t good enough to make the opening-day roster, but Streveler stuck around on the practice roster and eventually saw some time in place of an ineffective Zach Wilson.

Streveler helped an injury-riddled Bombers team win the Grey Cup in 2019 with late-season acquisition Collaros eventually getting the starting nod for the playoffs.

The quarterback stole the show at the Grey Cup parade with his outfit — a fur coat and a cowboy hat. He also wasn’t shy about enjoying a few drinks.

Barnes has top-selling NBA jersey in Canada, Gilgeous-Alexander top Canadian

Toronto Raptors star Scottie Barnes had the top-selling NBA jersey in Canada for the first half of the season.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James and game-changing guard Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors round out the top three of the 15-player list announced by the league on Tuesday.

Indiana Pacers all-star Pascal Siakam, who was traded from Toronto two weeks ago, was fourth on the list.

Hamilton’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder was the only Canadian on the list at 11th. He cracked the top 10 in jersey sales in France (eighth), Italy (seventh), Spain (eighth) and the United Kingdom (ninth).

Raptors rookie Gradey Dick was 15th in jersey sales in Canada.

Toronto, the Lakers, and Golden State were the top three teams in terms of Canadian sales.

Canada’s Valerie Grenier needs multiple surgeries after crash in super-G

INNSBRUCK, Austria — Canadian skiing star Valerie Grenier says she’ll need multiple surgeries after a serious crash during a World Cup super-G race Sunday in Cortina D’ampezzo, Italy.

While appearing to correct her trajectory to avoid a gate, Grenier lost an edge and was propelled into the air before falling heavily onto the track. She was taken off the course by toboggan after receiving lengthy medical treatment.

In a social media post from Innsbruck, Austria, she says she sustained a fractured humerus, a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a partial medial collateral ligament tear.

The 28-year-old from St. Isidore, Ont., adds that she’s scheduled for shoulder surgery in Innsbruck on Wednesday before likely heading home for knee surgery next week.

On Friday, Grenier finished in a three-way tie for third to pick up her fourth career World Cup medal and first in downhill. She won giant slalom gold in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, for the second win of her career on Jan. 6.

Grenier also suffered a major injury in February 2019 after breaking her leg in multiple places and her ankle during a downhill training run at the world championships in Are, Sweden.

Look what Chiefs made airlines do: New flight numbers offered for Super Bowl

MIAMI — Taylor Swift was born in 1989. Travis Kelce wears jersey No. 87.

American Airlines and United Airlines took notice.

Whether you’re a Swiftie or a member of Chiefs Kingdom, if you need flights from Kansas City to Las Vegas and the Super Bowl on Feb. 11, a few flight numbers might catch your eye.

American’s Flight 1989 is scheduled to run twice from Kansas City to Las Vegas on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10, both departing at 12:30 p.m. local time. And after the game, Flight 87 leaves Las Vegas for Kansas City at 12:20 a.m. local time on Feb. 12.

These aren’t regularly scheduled flights, either.

“You could say that after tonight’s games, we are in our football era, and we are thrilled to provide additional direct flights from Kansas City to Las Vegas,” American Airlines said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “To our customers who are huge sports fans, look what you made us do.”

It wasn’t just Swift and Kelce whose numbers are now flight numbers. There are three Flight 15 offerings, which happens to be quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ jersey. Flight 15 from Kansas City to Las Vegas is on Feb. 8. The same flight number, this time going from Vegas to Kansas City, is offered Feb. 12 and Feb. 13.

There’s also a Flight 1521, combining the numbers of Mahomes and safety Mike Edwards. That one is running from Kansas City to Las Vegas once.

United Airlines also has added a flight 1989 from Kansas City to Las Vegas and added separate flights with connections to Kelce and the 49ers.

Canucks’ Myers fined $5,000 for elbowing Blue Jackets’ Kuraly

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety fined Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers $5,000 on Sunday for elbowing Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly.

Myers was fined the maximum amount for this type of incident under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The hit occurred in the third period of their game on Saturday night and was the subject of a bizarre call and subsequent review process.

Originally, the five-minute major was assessed to teammate Ian Cole for a hit from behind on the Blue Jackets’ Justin Danforth. However, following the review, Myers instead had his night cut short with the referees deciding that his hit on Kuraly deserved the penalty.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said after that game that he reached out to the league and the explanation he received was that they wanted to “just get the call right.”

Myers currently has three goals and 18 points for the league-leading Canucks.

Raptors’ Barrett doubtful vs. Hawks with knee swelling, Quickley out

Toronto Raptors wing RJ Barrett has been listed as doubtful for their game against the Atlanta Hawks as he deals with left knee swelling, the team announced Sunday.

The Raptors were already set to be shorthanded against the Hawks with guard Immanuel Quickley out with a thigh injury and centre Jakob Poeltl doubtful as well with an ankle injury. Forward Jontay Porter is a game-time decision after sustaining an eye injury in a loss Friday to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Barrett was a late addition to the injury report after seemingly not dealing with issues in the game Friday.

This could be the first game he has missed since joining the Raptors.

In his 13 games with Toronto, Barrett has found his groove, averaging 21 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 55 per cent from the field and 36 per cent from deep.

The Raptors are currently 16-29, two games out of a play-in spot, and sit in 12th place in the east.

Wrexham could face Premier League Newcastle in FA Cup

LONDON (AP) — Ryan Reynolds could get a taste of big time soccer after Wrexham was drawn to potentially play Premier League Newcastle in the FA Cup.

Wrexham still has to book its place in the fifth round by beating second division Blackburn Rovers, but it has been given an extra incentive to win Monday’s game at Ewood Park.

A potential home match against Newcastle would add a latest sprinkle of glamour to the Welsh team, which has been transformed since being bought by Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney in 2021.

Their backing has already seen Wrexham promoted to the English Football League and gain global fame because of the hugely popular fly-on-the-wall documentary series Welcome to Wrexham.

Newcastle has rich backers of its own after being bought by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, also in 2021.

Also, non-league Maidstone will play second division opposition in the next round after being drawn against Sheffield Wednesday or Coventry.

Defending champion Manchester City is away at Premier League rival Luton.

The winner of Manchester United vs Newport on Sunday will play Bristol City or Nottingham Forest.

The FA Cup fifth-round draw:

Newcastle United at Blackburn Rovers or Wrexham
Leeds United or Plymouth Argyle at Chelsea or Aston Villa
Leicester City at AFC Bournemouth
Watford or Southampton at Liverpool
Newport County or Manchester United at Bristol City or Nottingham Forest
Brighton & Hove Albion at Wolverhampton Wanderers
Maidstone United at Sheffield Wednesday or Coventry City
Manchester City at Luton Town

Bundesliga Roundup: Kane scores in injury-hit Bayern win over Augsburg

AUGSBURG, Germany (AP) — Harry Kane scored his 23rd Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich in a 3-2 win over local rival Augsburg on Saturday when Kingsley Coman went off hurt.

Elsewhere, Stuttgart hammered Leipzig 5-2 and a spectator unexpectedly became a game official in Wolfsburg.

Kane needed a video review to be sure of scoring Bayern’s third goal. He was in an offside position when Jamal Musiala played the ball, but the replay showed it came off Augsburg’s Kristijan Jakić. It followed two Bundesliga games without scoring for Kane, his longest such break since signing for Bayern.

Earlier, 19-year-old midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović opened the scoring with his first goal in the Bundesliga following a corner. Alphonso Davies hit a low, curling drive to make it 2-0, for his first goal since scoring against Augsburg 10 months ago. Ermedin Demirović’s header briefly gave Augsburg hope of a comeback before Kane scored.

Bayern gave away two late penalties, one saved by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, the other converted by Demirović.

Bayern forward Coman seemed to be injured as Pavlovic scored the opening goal. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel was already contending with a raft of injuries and absences among key players.

New loan signing Eric Dier had his first Bayern start since joining from Tottenham alongside Matthijs de Ligt in the center of defense. Raphael Guerreiro, normally a left back, was on the right of defense, while Pavlovic made his fourth career Bundesliga start in midfield.

Bayern stayed second. League leader Bayer Leverkusen hosted Borussia Moenchengladbach late Saturday.

LEIPZIG SLUMPS

Deniz Undav’s hat trick for Stuttgart gave his team the edge in the race to qualify for the Champions League. Leipzig has started 2024 with three straight losses in the Bundesliga.

Stuttgart stayed third and tightened its hold on a Champions League qualifying place. The team showed it can get goals even without top scorer Serhou Guirassy, who is with Guinea at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Benjamin Šeško and Loïs Openda scored for Leipzig but the young forwards couldn’t balance out poor defending, especially for Undav’s third goal, when Leipzig seemed unprepared for a quickly taken Stuttgart free kick.

FAN BECOMES GAME OFFICIAL

A spectator from the crowd was the star of Wolfsburg’s 1-1 draw with Cologne after stepping in to serve as the fourth official.

Tobias Krull, who’s normally a goalkeeper for a local sixth-division team, volunteered to help after assistant referee Thorben Siewer was hit in the face by a clearance and left the field hurt.

United States midfielder Kevin Paredes scored in his first start for Wolfsburg since Nov. 10.

Werder Bremen beat Freiburg 3-1. Hoffenheim and Heidenheim drew 1-1.

NBA Rumour Roundup: How big a change do the Lakers need to make?

The Los Angeles Lakers are taking their time.

On Jan. 23 of last season, the always-entertaining-at-the-deadline team made their first of many moves destined to reshape their roster around LeBron James and Anthony Davis, trading away Kendrick Nunn and some draft capital for Rui Hachimura.

They then went all-in, flipping former MVP Russell Westbrook to the Utah Jazz as part of a three-team trade that netted them Malik Beasley, D’Angelo Russell and Jarred Vanderbilt.

The Lakers have sputtered to a 23-23 start, firmly in the battle for the play-in as the ninth seed. A less than ideal record despite James and Davis only having missed a combined seven games, the lowest mark in their time in Los Angeles.

“I don’t play fantasy basketball,” James said last Wednesday when asked about what moves could be ahead for his team. “What I do is focus on the guys that are here in uniform and show up to work every day. It’s too disrespectful to be thinking about what we need, what we don’t have.”

However, should they want to make the most of what they’ve got left of James, and considering the ageless wonder is in the final year of an extension should he choose to decline his $51 million play option, the Lakers need to think about what they need.

According to The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, the Lakers are weighing three different paths: Going all-in, making incremental changes around the edges, or standing pat. What could those three options look like?

Well, standing pat is self-explanatory. The team could see how far this core could take them, and with the in-season tournament win under their belt, there may be confidence within the organization that this team as constructed has enough when the games matter most.

As for incremental changes, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that the Lakers have an interest in trading for Dennis Schroder and Bruce Brown from the Toronto Raptors.

With free agent signing Gabe Vincent set to miss up to another month after undergoing knee surgery, the Lakers have a hole at backup point guard that could be remedied by a reunion with Schroder who has had two separate stints with the organization in 2020-21 and 2022-23.

According to McMenamin, they could be interested in bringing in Utah Jazz guard Collin Sexton who is averaging 17.4 points on strong .489/.380/.886 splits, largely off the bench. They’re also looking at Washington Wizards guard Tyus Jones, who ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said is the “most likely” Wizard to be traded.

As for all-in moves, the biggest name left on the trade market seems to be Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, and according to reports from Buha and Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the Lakers are firmly in contention for his services, with the latter going so far as to say that they’ve “made the most aggressive known bid to date for Murray,” and have been “willing to include a 2029 first-round pick plus a pick swap.”

All it would take for salaries to match on the deal would be sending Russell the other way, however, the Lakers guard has been on a tear of late since returning to the starting lineup on Jan. 13, averaging 27.4 points on .538/.531/.889 splits while dishing out 6.6 assists a game.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania also reported that should the Lakers send Russell away, it’s expected that the Hawks reroute the guard to a third team.

LaVine stuck in limbo

When you sign a player to a five-year, $215 million deal more to not lose him than to actually build around him, chances are that contract will look like an albatross as the situation progresses evermore towards blowing it up.

As it stands, the suitors for Zach LaVine and his massive deal are few and far between, with many teams unwilling to swallow the pill of retaining him until 2025-26 (with a player option in 2026-27) for upwards of $40 million per year.

The Lakers and Sixers, who were both named as potential options in the fall when rumours began swirling, are reportedly not engaged in discussions for the two-time all-star according to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times and Charania respectively.

Instead, a surprise team has joined the mix with the Detroit Pistons reportedly engaging in conversation with the Bulls about LaVine. According to The Athletic’s James Edwards III, Chicago was interested in a package built around wing Bojan Bogdanovic and one of the Pistons’ ‘blue-chippers,’: Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Ausar Thompson or Jalen Duren.

However, the Pistons have no interest in parting with any of those four players and turned down a similar offer from the Atlanta Hawks for Dejounte Murray.

However, talks are ongoing and the Pistons, despite their horrendous league-low 5-39 record, could be a player as they look to go anywhere but further down.

With only $74 million of guaranteed money on the books next season, the penny-pinching Pistons would have ample space to absorb LaVine’s contract and hope that the high-flying guard helps Cunningham and Ivey take the next step.

What to do about the mushy-middle?

Directionless would be a stretch, but the grouping of teams seeded nine through thirteen in the East have significantly more questions than answers regarding the upcoming trade deadline.

We’ve touched on the Atlanta Hawks (18-27) and the Chicago Bulls (21-25), with both teams likely to explore the trade market to trade the closest thing to stars left on the market in Murray and LaVine respectively.

Rumours have begun circulating around defensive stud Alex Caruso and it’s been reported by Jake Fischer that they’re looking for multiple first-round picks in exchange for him.

Further down the standings, the Brooklyn Nets seem to be at an impasse, as their team is nowhere near good enough to make noise and tanking could be pointless as they don’t own their own draft pick this year.

However, without many ways to improve this season, they’ve emerged as a candidate to sell off a few of their role-players including Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale.

According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Sacramento Kings could be a team to watch out for in the Finney-Smith sweepstakes after missing out on potential deals for the Raptors’ OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam. Meanwhile, the Suns have shown interest in O’Neale according to Fischer.

Next up is the Toronto Raptors (16-29) who have lost eight of their last ten and sit in 12th in the East. Though the big pieces have already moved, more could be on the horizon with the frequent names being Bruce Brown, Gary Trent Jr. and Chris Boucher, though potential landing spots are still anyone’s guess.

Fast Breaks

– With the forward approaching unrestricted free agency, the Charlotte Hornets’ Miles Bridges has reportedly been a target for the Phoenix Suns, according to PHNX Sports writer Gerald Bourguet. He also mentioned that Hornets big man Nick Richards could be in the mix.

Per Fischer, the Lakers, Kicks and Rockets have been talking to the Portland Trail Blazers about reigning Sixth-Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon, with the Rockets reportedly also looking at acquiring injured big man Robert Williams III, both of which were acquired in the trade that sent Jrue Holiday to the Boston Celtics.

– The Knicks could look to upgrade their depth at the five with Mitchell Robinson’s status still in the air regarding whether or not he can make a return late in the season. Ian Begley from SNY said that the white-hot Knicks could be looking at Daniel Gafford of the Wizards, in a deal sending Quentin Grimes the other way.

FA Cup: Maidstone stuns Ipswich to become lowest-ranked team since 1978 to reach fifth round

IPSWICH, England (AP) — Non-league team Maidstone pulled off one of the biggest FA Cup upsets in years by beating second-division Ipswich 2-1 on Saturday to become the lowest-ranked team since 1978 to reach the fifth round.

Sam Corne scored the winner for the sixth-tier team in the 66th minute and goalkeeper Lucas Covolan made a string of saves in the final minutes to set off wild celebrations among the more than 4,400 away fans at Portman Road.

“The magic of the FA Cup is very much alive,” Maidstone manager George Elokobi said.

Maidstone is the first team from outside the top five English leagues to make the fifth round of the FA Cup since Blyth Spartans in 1978.

Lamar Reynolds put the visitors ahead against the run of play by finishing off a quick counter in the 43rd minute by lobbing Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton. Jeremy Sarmiento equalized for Ipswich in the 56th but Walton then set up Corne in the area 10 minutes later, and he rifled home inside the near post.

Maidstone beat fourth-tier team Barrow and third-tier side Stevenage to get to the fourth round, and can now dream of a meeting with one of the Premier League giants in the last 16. The draw for the fifth round will be held Sunday.

Ipswich is in second place in the second-tier Championship and on course for promotion to the Premier League, but manager Kieran McKenna gambled by making 10 changes from the team that played Leicester in the league on Monday.

Still, Ipswich dominated early and struck the post twice before being stunned by Reynolds’ opener.

Raptors’ Quickley out Friday vs. Clippers with ‘right thigh contusion’

Toronto Raptors guard Immanuel Quickley will miss Friday’s tilt against the Los Angeles Clippers with a “right thigh contusion.”

Quickley was absent from practice on Thursday after picking up the injury against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday, but he is not expected to be out long. Rajakovic said he is day-to-day, and will travel with Toronto on their six-game road trip that kicks off on Sunday in Atlanta.

This would be the first game Quickley has missed as a member of the Raptors since joining the team in late December. The 24-year-old is averaging a career-high 16.7 points, 6.1 assists and 4.6 rebounds on 44 percent from three, while also shooting 41.1 percent from the field.

Rajakovic also mentioned that with Quickley’s absence, Scottie Barnes is in line to start at point against the Clippers, with guard Dennis Schroder to continue to come off of the bench.

Elsewhere, centre Jakob Poeltl has continued to progress after returning to practice this week, but will remain out on Friday. His return is expected at some point during the road trip. Rookie Gradey Dick is also back with the team after playing with the Raptors 905 on Wednesday.

Jackson, McCaffrey and Prescott named finalists for AP 2023 NFL MVP and OPOY

Lamar Jackson, Christian McCaffrey and Dak Prescott are finalists for The Associated Press 2023 NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year awards.

The winners will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 8. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league completed voting before the playoffs began.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen and 49ers QB Brock Purdy also are finalists for MVP. Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill and Cowboys wideout CeeDee Lamb are the other two finalists for Offensive Player of the Year.

Jackson, the 2019 NFL MVP, threw for 3,678 yards and 24 touchdowns and also ran for 821 yards and five scores. He helped the Baltimore Ravens (14-4) finish with the best record in the league and led them to a playoff win over Houston. Jackson received 45 of 50 votes for AP first-team All-Pro.

The Ravens will host the Kansas City Chiefs (13-6) in the AFC championship game on Sunday.

Prescott had 4,516 yards passing, an NFL-best 36 TD passes and a 105.9 passer rating while leading Dallas to an NFC East title. But the Cowboys were eliminated in the wild-card round by Green Bay.

McCaffrey, a unanimous choices for AP All-Pro, led the NFL with 1,459 yards rushing and had 14 rushing TDs for San Francisco. He also had 564 yards receiving for seven scores.

Purdy, McCaffrey and the 49ers (13-5) will host the Detroit Lions (14-5) in the NFC championship game on Sunday.

The Cleveland Browns have finalists in four categories: Myles Garrett for Defensive Player of the Year; Kevin Stefanski for Coach of the Year; Joe Flacco for Comeback Player of the Year; Jim Schwartz for Assistant Coach of the Year.

The Houston Texans have finalists for Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year. QB C.J. Stroud and edge rusher Will Anderson Jr., selected back-to-back with the second and third picks in the NFL draft, are aiming to make it two straight years the winners are from the same team. New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Sauce Gardner won the awards in 2022.

The Texans routed the Browns in a wild-card playoff before losing at Baltimore in the divisional round.

Cowboys edge Micah Parsons and cornerback DaRon Bland, Raiders edge Maxx Crosby and Steelers edge T.J. Watt join Garrett as finalists for Defensive Player of the Year.

Watt led the NFL with 19 sacks, Crosby had 14 1/2 and Garrett and Parsons each had 14. Bland set an NFL record with five interception returns for a touchdown.

Lions tight end Sam LaPorta and running back Jahmyr Gibbs, Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua and Falcons running back Bijan Robinson are finalists for Offensive Rookie of the Year along with Stroud.

Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, Rams defensive lineman Kobie Turner, Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon join Anderson as finalists for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Houston’s DeMeco Ryans, Detroit’s Dan Campbell, San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan and Baltimore’s John Harbaugh are finalists for Coach of the Year along with Stefanski.

Stefanski, the 2020 winner, led the Browns to an 11-6 record despite losing Deshaun Watson and having to use four starting QBs. Ryans took the Texans from the AFC South’s worst to first in his rookie season. Campbell helped Detroit capture its first division title in 30 years. Harbaugh and Shanahan led their teams to No. 1 seeds.

Schwartz guided the NFL’s No. 1 ranked defense in his first season as Cleveland’s defensive coordinator. Watch Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor throw down in new ‘Road House’ movie trailer

Combat sports fans won’t have to wait much longer to see Conor McGregor back in action … only the action will involve the Irish superstar performing on screen as opposed to in a cage.

The former two-weight UFC champion landed his first feature film role for the upcoming Road House, a remake of the popular 1989 movie of the same name starring Sam Elliott and the late Patrick Swayze. The 2024 version, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, released its official trailer online Thursday morning and McGregor proudly posted it to his social media channels.

“An ex-UFC middleweight fighter ends up working at a rowdy bar in the Florida Keys where things are not as they seem,” the plot reads, according to IMDb.com.

Several scenes were filmed early in 2023 during UFC 285 fight week in Nevada.

Former UFC and Bellator welterweight Jay Hieron, who competed against Georges St-Pierre, Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren during his MMA career, is also acting in the movie.

Gyllenhaal slapped Hieron in one sequence that took place during the ceremonial weigh-ins — where a fictional UFC 222 weigh-in was set up — and the two filmed a fight sequence between real sanctioned bouts at the UFC 285 event at T-Mobile Arena last March with UFC announcer Bruce Buffer, noted MMA referee Chris Tognoni, plus various members from the UFC staff also involved.

The 2024 movie, an Amazon MGM Studios production, will not be getting a theatrical release. It is instead set for a streaming release on Prime Video on March 21.

Ironically, the film’s director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity, Swingers) wrote an op-ed for Deadline on Wednesday this week explaining why he will be boycotting the SXSW premiere of his movie, feeling the big-budget motion picture deserved a release on the big screen and that decision like this are hurting cinemas.

“The movie is fantastic, maybe my best, and I’m sure it will bring the house down and possibly have the audience dancing in their seats during the end credits,” Liman wrote. “But I will not be there. My plan had been to silently protest Amazon’s decision to stream a movie so clearly made for the big screen.”

Hieron’s character is named “Jax Harris,” while McGregor plays “Knox” who based on the trailer is presumably playing one of the villains opposite Gyllenhaal’s protagonist.

Nick Dunlap, PGA Tour’s first amateur winner in 33 years, turns pro

Nick Dunlap, who became the PGA Tour’s first amateur winner in 33 years, turned pro and accepted membership to join the PGA Tour on Thursday.

Dunlap, who is a sophomore at the University of Alabama, becomes the youngest member on tour at 20 years old.

Dunlap was victorious at The American Express this past Sunday to become the tour’s first amateur winner since Phil Mickelson at the Tucson Open in 1991.

Playing in just his fourth tour event, Dunlap became the seventh amateur winner since 1945 — and the third since 1957.

“Nothing like I’ve ever felt,” Dunlap said. “It was so cool to be out here and experience this as an amateur. Whether I had made that or missed that (last putt), if you would have told me (on) Wednesday night I would have a putt to win this golf tournament, I wouldn’t believe you.”

Dunlap had to forfeit the $1.5 million prize due to his amateur status.

The Huntsville, Alabama, native is also the first reigning U.S. amateur champion to win on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods in 1996.

He will make his first start as a member of the tour during next week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
