The NHL’s Department of Player Safety fined Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers $5,000 on Sunday for elbowing Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly.
Myers was fined the maximum amount for this type of incident under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The hit occurred in the third period of their game on Saturday night and was the subject of a bizarre call and subsequent review process.
Originally, the five-minute major was assessed to teammate Ian Cole for a hit from behind on the Blue Jackets’ Justin Danforth. However, following the review, Myers instead had his night cut short with the referees deciding that his hit on Kuraly deserved the penalty.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said after that game that he reached out to the league and the explanation he received was that they wanted to “just get the call right.”
Myers currently has three goals and 18 points for the league-leading Canucks.
