The seven-foot-four star rookie had a career-high 40 points in the game, along with 20 rebounds and seven assists over 38 minutes of play.

Idle Canucks can clinch first playoff spot in four years on Saturday

The Vancouver Canucks can clinch a playoff spot on Saturday and earn a post-season return for the first since 2020. And they don’t even have to step on the ice.

According to the NHL, the Canucks can secure their ticket on Saturday if the Wild lose to the Golden Knights in any manner and the Blues fall to the Sharks in regulation. It would mark just their second playoff appearance since 2015.

The Canucks are idle, but the Golden Knights will be in St. Paul to take on the Wild (12:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 p.m. ET on Sportsnet+). If Vegas wins, then the Canucks will have to wait a few hours for the Blues/Sharks game to begin (5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET on Sportsnet+).

Vancouver (45-20-8) is currently in first place in the Pacific Division with 98 points, holding down the second seed in the Western Conference. The Canucks’ next game is Sunday at home against Anaheim.

Toronto FC star Lorenzo Insigne expected to be out six weeks with hamstring injury

TORONTO — Toronto FC coach John Herdman says Italian star Lorenzo Insigne is expected to miss six weeks with a hamstring injury.

A distraught Insigne hobbled off in first-half stoppage time of last Saturday’s 2-0 win over visiting Atlanta, trying not to put weight on his right leg, after pulling up in the Atlanta penalty box on what seemed an innocuous play.

Herdman said experts in Canada, England and Italy had studied Insigne’s MRI, calling the news “a huge blow for us.”

The 32-year-old Italian played in just 20 of 34 league games last season and Toronto looked to limit his minutes early this season in a bid to keep him healthy.

He has scored twice this season, both game-winners that were named the MLS goal of the week.

Toronto (3-1-1) hosts Sporting Kansas City (1-1-3) on Saturday. A win and Toronto matches its wins total from last season when it finished last in the league at 4-20-10.

Khamzat Chimaev vs. Robert Whittaker No. 1 contender bout set for summer main event

A middleweight matchup between former 185-pound champion Robert Whittaker and undefeated star Khamzat Chimaev will meet in a UFC Fight Night main event this summer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This will mark the first time the organization has hosted an event in Saudi Arabia and Dana White announced early Thursday the two fighters will compete in an official No. 1 contender’s matchup with the winner earning a title shot.

“This card is going to be badass from top to bottom,” the UFC president said during the announcement. “It’s going to be historic. It’s our first-ever show from The Kingdom.”

The organization had originally planned on going to Riyadh on March 2, but the UFC’s debut there was postponed to June 22 for a combination of reasons. One was that at the time the UFC could not put together a strong enough fight card to warrant holding an event at Kingdom Arena, a venue with a capacity of more than 25,000. Another was the fact a PFL vs. Bellator card took place there in late February and then the Francis Ngannou vs. Anthony Joshua boxing match in early March. The UFC would’ve been sandwiched between those two notable events otherwise.

Chimaev improved to 13-0 in mixed martial arts at UFC 294 in October when he won a three-round majority decision over Kamaru Usman, the former welterweight champion who took that fight on only 10 days’ notice and was making his middleweight debut.

The 29-year-old Chimaev is 7-0 in the UFC with other notable wins over Gilbert Burns, Kevin Holland and Gerald Meerschaert. Considered a blue-chip prospect from the moment he first stepped into the Octagon in the summer of 2020, Chimaev also holds a pre-UFC knockout win over Ikram Aliskerov that has aged very well. Plus, he boasts some of the best wrestling credentials in the division.

Whittaker, meanwhile, bounced back from a technical knockout loss to Dricus Du Plessis last July with a three-round unanimous decision win over Paulo Costa at UFC 298 in February.

Du Plessis is the current middleweight champion after winning a split decision over Sean Strickland at UFC 297 in January. Du Plessis’s first title defence has not yet officially been determined, however, it could be against former longtime middleweight kingpin Israel Adesanya who hasn’t fought since losing the title to Strickland by unanimous decision in September.

White announced the following bouts will also take place June 22: Sergei Pavlovich vs. Alexander Volkov; Volkan Oezdemir vs. Johnny Walker; Kelvin Gastelum vs. Daniel Rodriguez; Shara Magomedov vs. Ihor Potieria.

Report: Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson expected to play vs. Raptors

New York Knicks centre Mitchell Robinson was upgraded to questionable ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Raptors and is expected to be active and available to play, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

Robinson has been out of the lineup since Dec. 8 and underwent ankle surgery. At the time, his availability for the remainder of the season was in doubt. But Robinson returned to practice last week and on Monday, head coach Tom Thibodeau suggested Robinson’s recovery was ahead of OG Anunoby and Julius Randle, two other key Knicks currently injured.

“Mitchell is moving quite well,” Thibodeau said Monday. “He’s cleared for contact and all that. He’s going through practices and so just needs a little more time. But he’s doing really well overall.”

Robinson, who turns 26 on April 1, is among the game’s best rebounders and was averaging 10.3 rebounds and 6.2 points through 21 games before his injury. Now in his third year as a starter in New York, Robinson was authoring a career-year before his injury derailed his progress.

“I felt like I was finally getting in shape to the top of my career right there,” Robinson said last week. “And the next thing you know, (I) just went down and I wanted to throw s—.”

Maple Leafs’ Matthews on pace for NHL’s most goals in a season in nearly 30 years

Max Domi lined up for a faceoff in Washington, looked over at Alex Ovechkin and thought, “Wow, that’s going to be the greatest goal-scorer of all time.”

Then he looked over at Auston Matthews and realized his Toronto teammate could be in that discussion too.

That came in the middle of another two-goal game by Matthews, who has scored an NHL-leading 58 this season. Scoring 70 would require a goal-a-game tear down the stretch, which isn’t out of the realm of possibility by any means, but the U.S.-born centre is on pace for 67, which would be the most in the NHL in nearly 30 years.

“We’ve got more stuff to worry about in our locker room as far as trying to build our game toward the end of the season and stuff,” Matthews said. “The individual stuff, obviously you want to accomplish stuff. You want to push yourself to be as great as you can. That’s what I try to do every night. I’m just going to continue to push and try to elevate my game towards the stretch and do what I can to help the team win.”

Ovechkin owns the single-season record for goals in the salary cap era, which began in 2005, when he scored 65 in 2007-08. That was after rule changes opened up the game, increased power plays and showcased a generation of talent led by the Capitals winger and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby.

Matthews, Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon have succeeded Ovechkin and Crosby in those starring roles. Matthews (two seasons ago) and McDavid (three times) have already won the Hart Trophy as MVP, and MacKinnon is among the leading candidates for it this year.

Ovechkin, who at 848 goals is 47 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career record, is rooting for Matthews to surpass his single-season mark.

“I’m cheering for him,” Ovechkin said last week. “Happy for him. I hope he gets it. Maybe 70, you never know. He’s a special player. It’s fun to watch.”

Not so fun to defend. Washington coach Spencer Carbery said after his team’s loss to Toronto, “We had zero answer for No. 34 tonight,” referring to Matthews’ jersey number that has become as associated with him as 8 has for Ovechkin, 87 for Crosby, 97 for McDavid and 29 for MacKinnon.

Matthews has scored 60 in a season once and, given the Maple Leafs’ propensity for offence, it would be foolish to rule out a run that gets him to 70 before the playoffs begin.

“Just the way that he plays off the puck, plays to get pucks back, he’s always there in support,” teammate Bobby McMann said. “It’s easy to play with him, and there’s a reason he’s scoring so many.”

So many that there’s already buzz about whether Ovechkin’s time as hockey’s all-time leading goal-scorer, if he gets there, could be short-lived. Matthews is actually outpacing him at this point in their careers, with 357 goals in his first 550 games compared to Ovechkin’s 338.

“It’s crazy to think that Alex can break Wayne’s record, potentially, hopefully, and then Auston’s going to be sniffing at that, too,” Domi said. “It’s really special for guys like us to be able to play on the same ice surface as those guys and have fun and enjoy the moment because those are two generational talents.”

The Toronto Raptors have signed free-agent guard Kobi Simmons to a 10-day contract, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Simmons, 26, signed an NBA deal with Charlotte almost a year ago, but was waived by the Hornets on Aug. 30. He has played in 23 games for Raptors 905 of the G League this season, averaging 15.1 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds in 31.6 minutes per game.

Edmonton Oilers’ Vincent Desharnais returns to lineup vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Edmonton Oilers defenceman Vincent Desharnais will return to the lineup when his team faces the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada.

The 27-year-old suffered a hand injury last week against the Colorado Avalanche while fighting defenceman Josh Manson in the second period. He did not return to the game.

While he was still practising with the team, Desharnais missed two consecutive games. Head coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters on Wednesday that they were sitting him out as a precaution.

“If we needed him and it was the playoffs, he’d be ready to go,” Knoblauch said at the time. “We don’t want it to be an injury that aggravates.”

Desharnais has one goal and nine points in 63 games this season. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Oilers.
