Sheldon Keefe says ‘thank you Leafs Nation’ in message on social media

Former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe shared a classy message to fans and the organization after he was dismissed from his post on Thursday morning.

In a two-minute video shared on his Twitter account, Keefe thanks the management, players and fans for their support during his time as head coach. He also took responsibility for the team’s failure to go on deeper runs in the playoffs.

“Leafs Nation, the time has come to say goodbye,” Keefe said in the video message. “I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs. …I didn’t get it done in the playoffs. I didn’t help push our team over the line and deliver, I accept responsibility for that no excuses. That’s the job, I didn’t get it done, it’s the reality of the business and I accept it.”

Keefe was fired after a seven-game loss to the Boston Bruins in the first round.

During his time with the Leafs, Keefe put up a combined 212-97-40 record over parts of five campaigns, but was just 16-21 in the post-season, including a 1-5 series mark.

“To the players, I appreciate all your efforts. Your talents and work ethic made me look good on a lot of nights. Anyone who suited up for the blue and white I appreciate you,” Keefe said.

“Players and support staff will drive the team to success. I believe it will win, Leafs Nation you deserve your Stanley Cup. …I don’t know what comes next, but I know we’ll be ready for it. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy giving my family the time they deserve.”
