McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has had quite the sophomore season in Formula One.
The 23-year-old Australian driver earned his first career grand prix victory and sits fourth in the drivers’ championship with the series currently on hiatus for its summer break.
Piastri also revealed Sunday on social media he sustained a broken rib during the first half of the year.
“First part of the season done. First GP victory. First broken bone. Rib’s enjoying the break,” Piastri wrote.
Piastri did not say how or when he broke the rib. His scan is dated July 8 — one day after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Piastri won the Hungarian Grand Prix two weeks later on July 21 and came in second at the Belgian GP the following weekend after Mercedes driver George Russell, who crossed the finish line first, was disqualified for having an underweight car.
Injuries have been a bit of a theme among race winners this year. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was victorious at the Australian GP in March, two weeks after undergoing surgery on his appendix, while Piastri’s McLaren teammate Lando Norris arrived at the Miami GP in May with a bandaged nose after partying in Amsterdam. Norris went on to win Miami to claim his maiden victory in F1.
The F1 season resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix on Aug. 25.
