It was not smooth sailing at Friday’s UFC Fight Night weigh-ins with three fighters missing weight.
The event set for the UFC Apex is headlined by Marcin Tybura and Serghei Spivac, both of whom had no issues coming in under the heavyweight limit ahead of their scheduled five-round rematch.
Chelsea Chandler, Chepe Mariscal and Danny Barlow were each off the mark. All three logged their first attempt with more than an hour to spare before the official weigh-in window closed, but didn’t weigh in a second time, resulting in all three being fined an unspecified percentage of their purse. The UFC announced all three fights will proceed as scheduled.
Chandler was off by a whopping five pounds ahead of her bantamweight fight with Yana Santos. This is the second consecutive time Chandler has failed to make the bantamweight limit. Chandler is 2-1 at the UFC level and has only competed in catchweight or featherweight contests.
Chandler debuted in 2022 at a 140-pound catchweight, her second bout took place at 145 pounds and her most recent outing was also at a catchweight after she missed the non-title bantamweight limit by one pound.
Mariscal missed the featherweight limit by 3.5 pounds. His opponent, Damon Jackson stepped on the scale at the 146-pound limit. Jackson is coming off an April win over Anthony Hernandez before which Hernandez missed weight and forfeited a percentage of his purse to Jackson.
Undefeated welterweight Danny Barlow was 0.25 pounds heavy for his main card matchup with Nikolay Veretennikov, and MMAJunkie reported Barlow’s coach claimed the doctor would not allow the fighter to shed the final quarter pound.
Two fights were removed from the event earlier in the week and two fights underwent late opponent changes. The event will proceed with 10 bouts.
