U.S. reclaims women’s soccer gold with win over Brazil

The United States won gold in Olympic women’s soccer on Saturday, defeating Brazil 1-0 in the final at Parc des Princes in Paris.

The Americans have missed out on a medal only once since women’s soccer was added to the Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta. In that time, they have collected five gold, one silver and one bronze in seven tournaments, with the Rio Games in 2016 their only blemish.

The U.S. had not won gold since 2012 in London.

It was Brazil’s third silver medal, having lost to the U.S. in all three trips to the final, and sixth overall.

Canada was the defending Olympic champion, but was ousted by Germany in the quarterfinals.

The Germans pressed late, pushing the ball toward the U.S. goal repeatedly, but could not convert an equalizer. Captain Adriana came the closest, sending a header toward the goal in the fifth minute of added time, but American keeper Alyssa Naeher parried it away.
