Maple Leafs expected to give former Panther Steven Lorentz a PTO

The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to offer Steven Lorentz a professional tryout offer for their upcoming training camp, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Lorentz, 28, was drafted 186th overall by the Hurricanes in 2015 and has 230 games of NHL experience with Carolina, San Jose, and most recently Florida. After being traded by the Sharks last summer, Lorentz wound up playing 38 regular-season games and then 16 playoff games as the Panthers went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Born in Kitchener, Ont., and raised in next-door Waterloo, he has 21 goals and 43 points at the NHL level and plays centre. He is an unrestricted free agent, his most recent two-year deal carrying a $1.05 million AAV.

Professional tryout deals offer out-of-contract players a chance to earn a job in training camp.
