Canada’s Taylor Elgersma took full advantage of more playing time in his second pre-season appearance with the Green Bay Packers.
The 23-year-old quarterback out of Wilfrid Laurier University completed 7-of-11 passes for 109 yards on Saturday in the Packers’ 23-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
Elgersma took over for Malik Willis midway through the second quarter with the Packers trailing 13-0. He led three scoring drives, including two for touchdowns, to help the Packers get back in the game.
His numbers could’ve been even better, but he had a couple of big throws wiped out by penalties. Elgersma was replaced midway through the fourth quarter by 27-year-old QB Sean Clifford.
Saturday’s game marked a significant uptick in Elgersma’s playing time, as in Green Bay’s first pre-season game, he got in for just one drive at the end of the fourth quarter. He completed 3-of-4 passes for 24 yards in his lone drive last weekend.
But in his brief appearance last weekend against the New York Jets, Elgersma became the first Canadian university QB to play in an NFL exhibition game since 1982.
Elgersma, the 2024 Hec Crighton recipient, went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft but then signed as a free agent with the Packers.
He became the fourth Canadian university QB to ink an NFL deal, and the first since Steve Samways caught on with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1987, per 3 Down Nation.
In his senior season at Laurier, the London, Ont., native passed for 4,011 yards, 34 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He added 223 yards and six touchdowns rushing.
With Jordan Love and Willis as the clear top two in the Packers’ QB room, Elgersma is battling to earn the team’s No. 3 job.
