Sam Montembeault will be leading the Montreal Canadiens out on the ice for opening night.
Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis confirmed Tuesday that Montembeault will get the nod for the team’s season opener Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs (Sportsnet, 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT).
Montembeault, who has firmly established himself as the Canadiens’ No. 1 goaltender, is coming off a season that saw him play a career-high 62 games. Last season, he went 31-24-7 while posting a 2.82 goals-against average, .902 save percentage and four shutouts.
He will look to at least match the performance he had on the season opener last year, when he recorded a historic 48-save shutout against Toronto.
Although Montembeault will get the bulk of the starts this season, Jakub Dobes won’t wait long to see the net as he’s expected to start in the second game of the season, when the Canadiens play the second half of a back-to-back against the Detroit Red Wings.
In his rookie season, Dobes appeared in 16 games, going 7-4-3 posting a 2.74 goals-against average a .909 save percentage and a shutout in his rookie season. He also saw action in the playoffs, playing in three games but struggled with a 2.91 goals against average, a .881 save percentage and a 1-2 record.
