Marc Bergevin named GM of Team Canada’s Spengler Cup team

Hockey Canada has turned to two seasoned NHL executives to lead the national men’s team into this year’s Spengler Cup.

Marc Bergevin, the former general manager of the Montreal Canadiens and current senior adviser with the Los Angeles Kings, has been named general manager of the Canadian team for the tournament, Hockey Canada announced Monday.

Joining Bergevin as associate general manager is Stacy Roest, who most recently served as assistant general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning and general manager of the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch.

“Marc and Stacy have extensive experience as executives in the National Hockey League and American Hockey League, and we are excited for them to bring their expertise to Canada’s National Men’s Team for the 2025 Spengler Cup,” Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations, said in a statement. “They not only bring a wealth of front office experience, but many years of professional and international playing experience.”

Bergevin, 59, spent nearly a decade with the Canadiens from 2012 to 2021, where he helped build a team that made it to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021. Prior to landing in Montreal, Bergevin was with the Chicago Blackhawks in a variety of roles, including assistant general manager during their 2010 championship season.

Roest, 50, will make his international management debut after 13 seasons in the Lightning organization, helping build the teams that captured consecutive Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. He was a part of the management group that helped the Syracuse Crunch reach the Calder Cup Final in 2017.

Roest has deep ties to the Spengler Cup, having represented Canada six times as a player, and winning a championship in 2003.

Canada will compete in Group C alongside host HC Davos and the U.S. Collegiate Selects.

The Canadians open the tournament Dec. 26 against the Collegiate Selects (2:15 p.m. ET / 11:15 a.m. PT). The championship game is set for Dec. 31 at 6:10 a.m. ET / 3:10 a.m. PT.
