Penguins’ Hallander diagnosed with blood clot in leg, out at least three months

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Filip Hallander has been diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg and is expected to miss at least three months, the team announced on Friday.

Hallander will rehab in Pittsburgh with the team’s medical staff and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center staff.

Hallander was selected in the second round by Pittsburgh in the 2018 draft. He was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020 as part of the Kasperi Kapanen trade, before being re-acquired by the Pens in 2021 for Jared McCann.

Since coming back to the Steel City, Hallander has played in 16 games with the Penguins, registering one goal and three assists. This season, the 25-year-old Swedish forward skated in 13 games for the big club, recording all four points.

Hallander spent the last two seasons in the Swedish Hockey League, posting 89 points (40 goals, 49 assists) in 102 games.
