LeBron James‘ season debut is getting closer.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar was cleared for contact and will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks as he continues to rehab from sciatica, a lower-body nerve issue on his right side, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Thursday.
James, 40, already missed his first season opener in 23 career seasons due to the ailment.
When he does step on the court this season, he’ll become the first NBA player to compete in 23 seasons. He’s currently tied with Vince Carter for the all-time record.
James, who will be the oldest active player in the league, has proven to be plenty productive when available. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists and one steal on 60.4 per cent true shooting in 70 games last year, earning a remarkable 21st consecutive all-star nod while making the all-NBA second team.
The Lakers have gotten off to a roaring start despite James’ absence, sitting second in the West at 7-2 entering action on Thursday and riding a five-game win streak.
James has previously said he was targeting a mid-November return.
