English roundup: Liverpool rescues late victory with pair of goals

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool scored two goals in a minute late on to beat Fulham 4-3 in the Premier League on Sunday.

Trailing 3-2 at Anfield, goals from Wataru Endo and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 87th and 88th minutes secured a comeback win.

Liverpool had twice led in the match, but looked set to lose at home for the first time since February when Bobby De Cordova-Reid put Fulham ahead in the 80th.

That was until Endo sparked the comeback and Alexander-Arnold hit the winner soon after to extend the Merseyside team’s 100 percent winning home record this season and moved it to within two points of leader Arsenal.

Liverpool had taken the lead in the 20th through an own goal from Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno after Alexander-Arnold’s long-range 25-yard free kick.

Fulham evened the score four minutes later when former Liverpool player Harry Wilson squeezed a near-post shot under keeper Caoimhin Kelleher from Antonee Robinson’s cross.

The home team retook the lead in brilliant fashion as Alexis Mac Allister drove a shot into the top corner in the 38th.

Fulham evened the score again in the third minute of first-half stoppage time through Kenny Tete who headed in after Raul Jimenez flicked the ball on from a corner.

Leno denied Salah just before the break and Darwin Nunez smashed a shot against the crossbar in the second half.

Fulham went ahead when substitute De Cordova-Reid out-jumped Kostas Tsimikas at the far post.

Endo had a header saved and Salah fired the rebound over before Liverpool went on to complete its comeback.

Chelsea 3, Brighton 2

In London, Enzo Fernandez scored twice as 10-man Chelsea held on to beat Brighton 3-2. The midfielder struck in each half as the Londoners bounced back from last week’s 4-1 loss against Newcastle.

But Mauricio Pochettino’s team, which had Conor Gallagher sent off just before halftime, had to resist a fightback from Brighton that included a late penalty being overturned by VAR.

Chelsea led 2-0 after headers from Fernandez and Levi Colwill in the 17th and 21st minutes, but Facundo Buonanotte pulled a goal back for Brighton in the 43rd and Gallagher was shown a second yellow card just before the break.

Fernandez scored a penalty in the 65th to regain the home team’s two-goal advantage, but Joao Pedro came off the bench to score from a header in the second minute of stoppage time.

In a dramatic end to the match, Chelsea survived a penalty scare for a possible handball against Colwill with virtually the game’s final action.

Fernandez scored his first Premier League goal after heading in from close range from Benoit Badiashile’s hooked cross.

Colwill scored with a header four minutes later after connecting with Nicolas Jackson’s cross.

Buonanotte halved Chelsea’s lead when lashing a shot inside the far post with his left foot and soon after, Gallagher shown a second yellow card for sliding in late on Billy Gilmour.

Mudryk won a penalty after the break when he outpaced James Milner before being shouldered to the ground. Fernandez converted the ensuing spot kick.

Ten minutes of stoppage time had been announced by the time Pedro rose to glance a header across goal and in at the far post to give Brighton hope.

Then referee Craig Pawson was called to the touchline to review a handball against Colwill. The evidence seemed to show the ball strike the defender’s face to the relief of fans inside Stamford Bridge.

Bournemouth 2, Aston Villa 2

In Bournemouth, Ollie Watkins produced a dramatic 90th-minute equalizer as Aston Villa twice came from behind to rescue a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.

High-flying Villa looked to be heading for a shock defeat on the south coast until Watkins pounced on substitute Moussa Diaby’s cross to score his 13th goal of the season with a well-timed backward header.

The hosts, who had won three of their previous four matches, took a deserved lead in the 10th minute. Villa defender Diego Carlos was too casual playing out from the back and passed the ball straight to Ryan Christie who instinctively fed Antoine Semenyo to pick out the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Leon Bailey equalized with a superb solo goal in the 20th minute. Watkins, who had come through a late fitness test, played the ball out to Bailey on the right wing and the Jamaica international danced into space inside the penalty area before curling home left-footed beyond Neto.

The teams went in level at halftime but there was no denying Dominic Solanke seven minutes into the second half as he fired Bournemouth back in front with his seventh goal of the season. Milos Kerkez broke down the left before fizzing the pass into the feet of Solanke, who pirouetted away from Pau Torres before blasting beyond Emi Martinez.

But just as Bournemouth looked to be holding out for the win up stepped the in-form Watkins to salvage a share of the spoils. Villa stayed fourth. Bournemouth is 16th.

Crystal Palace 1, West Ham 1

In London, a second-half equalizer from Odsonne Édouard gave Crystal Palace a share of the points in a scrappy 1-1 derby against West Ham.

After a bright start by Palace, it was Mohammed Kudus who opened the scoring against the run of play to the delight of the home supporters at the London Stadium with the team’s first shot on target in the 13th minute. Kudus made no mistake after running into the box to meet Vadimír Coufall’s cut-back.

Édouard appeared set to nod in an equalizer early in the second half when a free kick was sent across the box only for James Ward-Prowse’s late intervention to deflect the ball behind allowed the Hammers to retain their lead.

It didn’t last long with Édouard making up for his earlier profligacy when an ill-judged back pass by Konstantinos Mavropanos allowed the Palace forward to intercept and score in the 53rd.

The 1-1 draw keeps West Ham manager David Moyes one defeat away from equalling Harry Redknapp’s record of 238 Premier League losses as the Hammers remain ninth in the table on 21 points. Palace stays 12th with 16, a seemingly comfortable nine points above the relegation zone.

Predators grant Tyson Barrie permission to talk to other teams

The Nashville Predators have given defenceman Tyson Barrie permission to talk to other teams in hopes of finding a better fit elsewhere, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday.

Barrie is expected to be a healthy scratch against the New York Rangers as the Predators try to find a trading partner.

The 32-year-old is a pending unrestricted free agent and has nine points while averaging 18:51 of ice time in 22 games with Nashville this season.

Barrie was traded to the Predators from the Edmonton Oilers last year as part of the return for defenceman Mattias Ekholm.

English roundup: Arsenal stays on top with win against Wolves

LONDON (AP) — Arsenal carved through the Wolverhampton defence with a couple of intricate team moves and held on for a 2-1 home win to extend its lead atop the English Premier League on Saturday.

Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard scored in the opening 13 minutes at Emirates Stadium and Wolves barely had a sniff at goal before being gifted a way back into the game in the 86th, when Matheus Cunha swept home following a defensive mixup.

But the Gunners clung on through a nervous eight minutes of added time to go four points clear of second-placed Manchester City. The defending champion hosts Tottenham on Sunday.

This win came on the heels of Arsenal’s 6-0 rout of Lens in the Champions League on Wednesday, and the Gunners attack again looked back to its free-flowing best in the early stages. The return of striker Gabriel Jesus from an injury has clearly rejuvenated Arsenal’s forward line, and while the Brazilian did not get a goal or an assist, his link-up play in the area played a crucial role in both early goals.

The first came when Saka started and finished off a well-worked move in the sixth minute. Double-teamed on the right wing, Saka managed to thread the ball through to Jesus on the edge of the area, and the Brazil forward held off a defender before flicking the ball on to Takehiro Tomiyasu. The Japanese right back fed it back to Saka, who went past Craig Dawson before slotting it past goalkeeper Jose Sa.

The second came when left back Oleksandr Zinchenko chased down a wayward cross from Saka and played a one-two with Jesus before squaring the ball back to Odegaard, who calmly side-footed inside the far corner.

Sa had to go off in the 22nd for an apparent back injury and was replaced by Dan Bentley, who needed the woodwork to bail him out in the 37th. Saka fed Gabriel Martinelli on a quick counter but the Brazilian rolled his shot against the far post.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya didn’t have a save to make until the 52nd, when he blocked a shot by Cunha from a tight angle.

Saka nearly curled in a long-range strike that went just over the bar in the 75th, and Bentley pulled off a double save to deny Leandro Trossard and Saka in the 82nd.

Then, out of nowhere, Wolves was revived when Arsenal failed to clear the ball in its area and it fell to Cunha, who swept it past Raya.

Arsenal nearly responded immediately as substitute Eddie Nketiah was played through on goal by Odegaard, but rolled his finish against the post.

That made for a nervy finish but Wolves couldn’t trouble Raya again. ___

Burnley 5, Sheffield United 0

In Burnley, the home side scored the fastest English Premier League goal of the season — inside 16 seconds — on its way to a 5-0 win over 10-man Sheffield United that lifted the team out of last place and ended its record seven-match losing run at home in stylish fashion.

Jay Rodriguez’s deflected header gave Vincent Kompany’s team a perfect start at Turf Moor. Jacob Bruun Larsen made it 2-0 in the 29th minute after running onto a ball over the top of the defense before stroking home a low finish.

Sheffield United’s task got even tougher in first-half stoppage time when Oli McBurnie, who was already on a yellow card for elbowing Dara O’Shea, did the same thing on the same opponent to earn another booking and get sent off.

Zeki Amdouni, American-born winger Luca Koleosho — with his first league goal — and Josh Brownhill added further strikes in the second half for Burnley, which recorded its second win of the campaign. Both of the victories have come over fellow promoted teams, having also defeated Luton away in October.

Burnley moved above the beaten visitors and onto seven points but was still in the relegation zone.

Almost exactly 10 years ago to the day, Rodriguez scored an even faster goal — after 13.68 seconds — for Southampton at Chelsea.

He is the only player to score in the opening 15 seconds of two separate league matches, according to stats company Opta.

Brentford 3, Luton 1

In London, Brentford scored three second-half goals to beat Luton 3-1.

Neal Maupay opened the scoring in the 49th and Ben Mee added a second seven minutes later. Although Jacob Brown pulled a goal back after defensive sloppiness, Shandon Baptiste sealed victory with a close-range finish in the 81st.

However, the Bees’ injury troubles worsened when Kristoffer Ajer picked up a knock in the warmup.

Brentford moved up to 10th place and Luton stayed in fourth-to-last place, only two points above the relegation zone.

Canadiens’ Newhook out approximately 10 to 12 weeks with high ankle sprain

Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook will be out for approximately 10 to 12 weeks with a high ankle sprain, the team announced Saturday.

The injury occurred early in the third period of Thursday’s loss to the Florida Panthers. Newhook lost an edge and slid feet-first into the net. He was helped off the ice by training staff and didn’t look to be placing any weight on his left leg.

The 22-year-old forward was acquired by the Canadiens in the off-season in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a first- and second-round pick and a prospect. He’s scored seven goals and 13 points in 22 games for the Canadiens this season, tying for fourth in team scoring.

The St. Johns, N.L., native was selected 16th overall by the Avalanche in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Ryan Reynolds thanks Canada’s Christine Sinclair ahead of her final matches

Ahead of her final two matches in a Canadian kit, Christine Sinclair received a message from a special fan.

In a sitdown interview with CBC’s Andi Petrillo, Sinclair was shown a video from Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds thanking her for her legendary career.

“I just want to wish you all the best, all the love and all the luck in retirement,” Reynolds started.

The co-owner of Welsh soccer team Wrexham then went on to congratulate Sinclair on the next step in her career.

“Well, it’s not really retirement, moving on in your career to Wrexham,” Reynolds said. “It’s huge for the town, for the club. I think that you are going to be probably the key difference-maker going forward up there in North Wales.”

Reynolds then finished the video by thanking Sinclair for all she has done for the sport of soccer throughout her career.

“What I really wanted to do is thank you,” Reynolds said. “I wanted to thank you for inspiring me, my kids, kids all over Canada and the world. Young, old, middle-aged. You’re incredible and you deserve all the applause that hands could possibly give. Sending you tons of love.”

After she finished watching, Sinclair didn’t confirm the “rumour” about her move to Wrexham, but also joked that her talents could had, for the right price of course.

“I mean, for the right amount of money, I could go,” Sinclair said to Petrillo with a laugh.

Reynolds and Canadian soccer fans can enjoy Sinclair’s final two international matches with a pair of games against Australia in her backyard — on Friday at Starlight Stadium in Langford, B.C., and Dec. 5 in Vancouver.

Maple Leafs’ Giordano has broken finger, considered week to week

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mark Giordano has been listed as week to week with a broken finger, the team said Thursday.

Giordano suffered the injury Tuesday against the Florida Panthers.

The 40-year-old Giordano has been a top-four defenceman for the Leafs this season, notching one goal and four assists in 20 games. He is averaging 17:52 of ice time per game.

The three-time all-star was still being evaluated Wednesday, with the team at that point saying he’d miss at least Thursday’s game against the Seattle Kraken.

The Leafs already are thin on defence with Timothy Liljegren (ankle) and John Klingberg (hip) both out.

Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said Liljegren skated Wednesday for the first time since suffering the injury, but that he’s “not close” to a return.

Klingberg also is out long-term.
