Report: NFL eyes ways to have players compete in flag football at Olympics

An NFL executive says the league will look at ways to allow players in the league to compete in flag football at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

NFL executive vice president Peter O’Reilly, speaking at league meetings, said the league will work with teams and the NFLPA to explore that possibility.

The L.A. Olympics are slated to run July 14-30, 2028, which coincides with the start of training camp on a traditional NFL schedule.

“We understand the desire. … We think it’s a great opportunity because the player interest is real and desirable,” O’Reilly said, per Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

The International Olympic Committee on Sunday included flag football as one of five new sports in the official program for the Los Angeles Games.

Flag football in the Olympics will be played with five players a side on the field.

It’s estimated flag football has 20 million players in over 100 countries, including Canada.
