The NHL trade deadline brought a flurry of moves, but it wasn’t just a select group of teams that came out as winners.
When the Carolina Hurricanes made a big splash back in January to acquire Mikko Rantanen from the Colorado Avalanche, another deal was struck shortly after.
Throughout his career, Rantanen has worn No. 96, but when he arrived in Carolina, that was not initially available to him. Jack Roslovic occupied that number when he joined the Hurricanes in the off-season, as he had with a few different teams.
Usually, a player will offer something if they really want a specific number that another teammate has, whether it’s money, a car, or a donation to charity.
With Rantanen in the fold, it was initially reported that Roslovic offered up No. 96 as a welcoming gesture. However, it was later revealed that Rantanen made an offer that Roslovic could not refuse.
With some help from fellow Finnish forward Joonas Salmela, Rantanen delivered to Roslovic a Rolex watch along with a custom 925-silver chain which was handmade by a Finnish master goldsmith, according to Ryan Henkel of the Hockey News. The watch is valued at over $10,000 USD, so it was a pretty penny for Rantanen to pay.
After Carolina decided to trade Rantanen to the Dallas Stars, however, No. 96 was vacant once again, and Roslovic didn’t hesitate to jump at the chance to get it back again.
So in the end, Roslovic was able to grab a brand new Rolex watch and a custom-made chain, all to change his jersey number for 14 games.
Safe to say Roslovic might have a career in making trades in his future after profiting big time on Rantanen’s short stay with Carolina.
