The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed forward Joona Koppanen to a one-year, $775,000 contract, the team announced Tuesday.
Koppanen was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
The 27-year-old from Tampere, Finland, appeared in 11 games with the Penguins this season and scored his first career NHL goal on March 18 against the New York Islanders.
He also had 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in 56 games with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Koppanen was drafted in the fifth round, 135th overall, by the Boston Bruins in 2016.
He has two points (one goal, one assist) in 20 career NHL games with the Bruins and Penguins.
