The Toronto Blue Jays are skipping Eric Lauer‘s turn in the rotation, but that doesn’t mean he’s out of the starting mix.
With Shane Bieber set to make his Toronto debut on Friday against the Miami Marlins, the Blue Jays announced their rotation plans for the series.
The plan calls for Lauer to be available out of the bullpen for this series. Jose Berrios will start Saturday, followed by Kevin Gausman on Sunday.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters it is not a permanent move to the bullpen for Lauer.

The Toronto Blue Jays continue interleague play with a weekend series against the Miami Marlins. Watch Friday’s game on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+ starting at 7:10 p.m. ET / 4:10 p.m. PT.
“It’s going to be a fluid situation,” Schneider said ahead of Wednesday’s game. “For that series he’ll be available out of the pen. It definitely doesn’t take him out of starting contention going forward.”
The addition of Bieber, making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, gives the Blue Jays six starters. Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer are the others.
Lauer has been huge for the Blue Jays this season, giving the team much-needed starting depth after some early-season struggles.
He has started in 14 of his 20 appearances, pitching to an 8-2 record and 2.76 ERA overall.
The Blue Jays signed Lauer to a minor-league contract in the off-season and he was called up from triple-A Buffalo on April 30.
