The Memphis Grizzlies‘ night took an unexpected turn when starting centre Zach Edey exited against the Denver Nuggets in the first quarter and never returned.
There was no clear moment that pointed to an injury, but the team downgraded the 23-year-old to doubtful not long after his departure. Head coach Tuomas Iisalo told reporters post-game, after what ended up as a 125-111 loss, that Edey had taken a hit to the head, but provided no further update.
The Toronto native has already dealt with injuries in his sophomore season, missing the Grizzlies’ first 13 games of the year while recovering from ankle surgery undergone in the summer.
Edey entered Monday having played in four consecutive games since his season debut, averaging 12.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.0 blocks through 25.3 minutes.
He left Monday’s contest after logging just two points and one rebound in six minutes of play.
Memphis returns to action Wednesday in New Orleans.
