Already riding high on a three-game win streak, the Toronto Maple Leafs got some good news concerning one of their top blue-liners.
Defenceman Chris Tanev was seen skating at practice for the first time since suffering a scary injury against the Philadelphia Flyers last week and is “progressing in the right direction,” head coach Craig Berube told reporters.
While he didn’t take part in the team practice, he was spotted wearing a non-contact black jersey and took part in a short solo skate.
“Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,” teammate Brandon Carlo said of Tanev after practice.
Tanev suffered the initial injury last Saturday against the Flyers after he was hit from behind by forward Matvei Michkov.
Tanev’s head snapped and he fell to the ice, holding his head and lying still until a team of trainers and medical staff loaded him onto a stretcher and off the ice. He was seen giving a thumbs-up as he was leaving the ice.
Following the hit, Tanev was brought to a hospital in Philadelphia and stayed overnight for evaluation before being discharged Sunday morning. He was then placed on the injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 1.
The injury was made worse by the fact that the 35-year-old had just returned to the lineup after missing 11 days with a concussion. No timeline for return was provided by the team.
The Toronto, Ont., native has only laced up for eight games this season and has two assists to his name. He’s logged an average of 17:20 of ice time per game.
