As Suns look for best possible Durant deal, Raptors loom as possibility

With the NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers nearing a conclusion and the June 25 draft quickly approaching, rumours about off-season moves are heating up — none bigger than speculation over Kevin Durant’s next destination.

On Tuesday’s episode of Sportsnet Today, NBA reporter Marc Stein joined Daniele Franceschi to break down Durant’s potential landing spots and what the Phoenix Suns hope to receive in return.

“They’re trying to get back as much as they can, and that’s why it’s been basically whispered to Team Durant that look, we’re not trying to send you somewhere you don’t want to go, but we gave up so much to get you, we’re duty-bound to try to get back as much as we can,” Stein said.

“Everyone dealing with the Suns knows they’re in a desperate situation, and teams like San Antonio and Houston are not interested in just giving them a haul.”

The reluctance of these teams to offer significant trade assets stems from the fact that Durant has only one year left on his $55 million contract and will turn 37 before next season.

This has opened the door for teams not on Durant’s preferred list, such as the Toronto Raptors, to make a push for the star.

“Do we see a Minnesota or Toronto or the Clippers or some mystery team say, you know what, we are willing to gamble and trade for (him) whether we have a commitment beyond next season or not, and they would do so in the belief that if you can just get him in the building, you can win him over, and of course the Raptors somewhat invented that script with Kawhi Leonard,” said Stein.

On the other hand, for a team like Toronto, it’s fair to question whether the former MVP still has enough left to justify such a significant gamble.

“It’s a fair point — the names that we’re hearing in terms of what is presumed to be Toronto’s willingness to part with in a significant trade, you know, RJ Barrett, [Immanuel] Quickley, Jakob Poeltl, the No. 9 pick — these are still trade assets that are not easy to part with,” Stein said.

Despite the potential cost, Stein said he believes acquiring Durant could be worthwhile, given the current state of the Eastern Conference.

“If you’re in the East, Kevin Durant certainly can move the needle because basically everyone in the East sees opportunity right now; we just saw this with the Orlando Magic,” Stein explained, referencing the Magic’s move to acquire guard Desmond Bane on Saturday.

If not Durant, rumours continue to swirl about Toronto’s willingness to make a big move this off-season. While there may not be another marquee name on the market now, Stein isn’t ruling out the possibility.

“The willingness does not guarantee that they will be able to find another splashy move, but look, the rumbles about [them] wanting to do something significant have been going around all month, so is there another difference maker who becomes available at this point?” Stein said.

“That’s not clear, but I would also say that when we woke up Saturday, I don’t know that a lot of us were anticipating Memphis trading [Desmond] Bane, so these things do materialize quickly sometimes.”

Investigation opened on harassment claims against Paris Saint-Germain

PARIS — The Paris public prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday that an investigation has been opened based on former Paris Saint-Germain player Kheira Hamraoui’s allegation of moral harassment against the soccer club.

Hamraoui lodged the complaint in May, when French media reported that the midfielder claimed she had been subjected to a campaign of insults, threats, denigration and cyber-harassment by several teammates. She now plays in Saudi Arabia for Al-Shabab.

She was attacked in November 2021 following an evening out with her former PSG teammate Aminata Diallo and other teammates. Hamraoui was hit several times with a metal bar and needed stitches for cuts on her hands and legs. There’s a judicial case ongoing regarding the attack.

Hamraoui, who has made 41 appearances for France, also accuses PSG of having sidelined her during her convalescence to encourage her to leave the club.

A PSG spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Other former PSG players also are at odds with the club.

Kylian MbappĂ©’s legal team says PSG owes the star 55 million euros ($61 million) in unpaid wages. It also accused PSG of harassment because of the way he was treated amid a transfer standoff. Adrien Rabiot also claims he was treated badly in the final months of his contract.

Report: Charge top scorer Tereza Vanisova leaves for Vancouver

PWHL Vancouver won’t be stopped when it comes to adding top forward talent.

Top Charge goal scorer Tereza Vanisova is leaving Ottawa to sign with the expansion team, according to Ian Kennedy of the Hockey News.

Vanisova was in high demand as many teams lost forwards during the expansion process, but none of the original six teams found a way to keep her away from the west coast.

As the Charge’s top goal scorer in the 2024-25 season, Vanisova dominated with 22 points in 30 games, making her a huge target in free agency. But the 29-year-old brought more than just 15 goals. Physical intensity is a huge part of her game as she led the league in penalty minutes with 38.

This marks the second consecutive season where the Charge have lost their top goal scorer during the off-season. Last year, Daryl Watts scored 10 goals for Ottawa before she was lost in free agency to the Sceptres. This year, Toronto chose to protect Watts in the expansion draft.

Vanisova joins two of her Charge teammates, goalie Emerance Maschmeyer and defender Ashton Bell, who have already landed in Vancouver.

Women’s Super League in England to expand from 12 to 14 teams

LONDON — The top women’s soccer league in England is set to expand from 12 to 14 teams for the 2026-27 season.

Women’s Super League clubs voted Monday for the change that still requires approval from the Football Association board.

At the end of the 2025-26 season, the top two teams from the second tier, WSL 2, will be automatically promoted while the third-placed team will enter a playoff with the last-placed finisher in the top league.

In future seasons, there will be one automatic relegation spot from the Women’s Super League and one automatic promotion spot. There will also be a playoff between the teams in second-to-last place in the Super League and the runner-up in WSL 2.

“The introduction of a promotion/relegation playoff creates distinction for the women’s game and introduces a high-profile, high-stakes match,” said Nikki Doucet, chief executive of WSL Football.
